TCS offer

I had an interview in TCS, they interviewed me on Java, backend tech AWS and related technologies including coding rounds.

After the managerial round I got a call from the manager asking for my current package and expected.

I asked for around 50% of the hike and the manager told me we cannot give this amount we have a budget of only 20% hike.

If this is so, why did they even interview me? Is the manager trying to tell me to ask for less in the HR round? Or usually it is like this only in TCS , any suggestions?

I am surprised as tonwhy the manager called to enquire the salary.. as HR circular is clear that salary discussions can only happen or initated by the HR team.

If there was a budget issues (Which keep changing based on project rates) they should not interviewed you in the first place as you said.

however factors like how long you have been employed in the current job, or did you get a recent hike determines the salary sway.

IMHO , the manager might be trying to know what is the market value of current candidates to back and negotiate a hike for themselves.
