The BS about work life balance

Recently the CHRO of my company called me into a discussion on improving WORK LIFE BALANCE. Wow. I just cannot understand. Look at this.

  1. Most companies work 5 days a week. (Except retail operations). So you get 52 weeks x 2. 104 days.
  2. 30 days annual leav
  3. 9 days statutory holidays.
  4. Operational holidays. 3. 145 days of 365 days corporate people don’t come to office. And in a hybrid format even more. It is these corporate vultures who want work life Balance. How can u balance your life if u r unable to do it in 145 days. So Narayana murthy is right - work hard like 80% of india. Who have almost no weekly off. Just saying.

Wtf is this crap?
What do I gain from working more? Does my salary go up? Or my health? Does it make my family happier? NO It just makes the Csuite and the shareholders richer. I'm happy to work longer if companies are willing to pay overtime. But as soon as I mention overtime you all behave like I asked for your first born.

What do you get from working more?

SKILLS

That you get by working on yourself and not working more.

Ah so you have little idea of how industries work

There are multiple companies other than retail that work 6-7 days - banking services, security, medical obviously, even fashion (non retail)

Also the idea that you get 52 weeks of no work is aspirational. People in advertising, consulting are working 5 days from office and 2 days at home

The annual leaves, the bosses hardly approve them, and if they so you come back to piles of work loaded

Work life balance is much needed.

Narayana Murthy didn't ask people to work 70 hours for Infosys. He mentioned as generic terms, for youngsters who should create for India, startups in basic terms

SillyJellybean
SillyJellybean

U r not saying it right. No one can make u work 7 days a week. If any company is doing that then immediately leave that exploitative company. Yes of course if there is a task I still work 15 days in a trot.

ZestyQuokka
ZestyQuokka

You can work 7 days a week if its your own startup

Lala spotted. Deliberately exaggerating numbers to make your perspective look valid

Most companies work 5 days a week - I would say most work 6 days a week. I could also say that most employees are made to work beyond the regular working hours in a day so 5 days a week is definitely off.

30 days annual leave - Who tf lets people take 30 leaves in a year without deducting pay? Do you let them? Most companies are closer to 18 leaves IMO.

And in a hybrid format even more - So you think people don't do any work in hybrid?

It's easy to ask employees to work more if you're making money out of it without paying them. Pay them on an hourly basis and you'll begin asking them to work less hours, lmao.

Sounds as if you are being explored. Can’t help u if you can’t help your self from getting exploited.

Exploited I mean

Anybody who wants to work 60-80 hours a week will do it for themselves and not for you. Corporates, lalas and founders should be grateful for low motivation inactive people, who end up working for them because these leaders in these companies on their own do absolutely no value-adding work

SillyJellybean
SillyJellybean

I worked mostly for other and worked for 60 to 80 hours a week during the start up stages. But not any more. It made me strong. And I have a built my own reputation. If u have a fairly good job u r part of the lucky ones. Stay blessed. Best wishes.

When I see someone work less number of hours than me and see them doing better work than me, that is when I get inspired. When I see someone slogging for 12 hours and giving an output that would have taken me 2 hours, I think I should get rid of this person and do it myself.
Luck is extremely weird in these things, where it only happens to people who have put in years of calculated effort into getting better than their previous selves to do something in a fraction of time.

If you are a founder, I pity your employees

Good one. I worked for companies. All my life. But 7 years as a founder. People who worked with me have done very well in life. Still great friends now almost like family. Don’t be so bitter. Spread hope and cheer.

As a new age founder, you should introspect and ensure that you're not an age-old slave driver :)

SillyJellybean
SillyJellybean

U seem condescending of old age entrepreneurs? All strong businesses and world changing ones are all driven by oldies! Smart new gen work for them. So watch what u say

SillyNarwhal

That's literally not what I said lmao, but comprehend it however you like; whatever floats your boat.

Which company is offering all this? How do I apply to work for this company?

SillyJellybean
SillyJellybean

Every company which is not working week ends gets this. If you work 6 days a week you will get about 95 days off in a year. Make do with that

Ser, I work 7 days a week and my CEO scheduled an hour long call with me on Dushehra, what do I make do with?

All work is an equal transaction the company pays me only because I am willing to exchange my skills & my time in return for money - we aren't owned by anyone, we are not slaves.

Age is taking a toll on Narayana Murthy, also note it the same guy who forced his employees to wear neck-ties as a prop and the Infosys employees dress code became butt of a joke among other folks.
