The Dark Reality of My Friend's 'Perfect' IT Job: A Shocking Turn of Events
My friend used to rave about his company. For the first two years, everything seemed perfect. Sure, the pay was lower than the average IT company, but the work-life balance made up for it. There was no pressure, the workload was manageable, and it seemed like a dream job. My friend even had the luxury of hanging out with me during office hours while working remotely—it was that relaxed.
But everything changed two months ago. The company bought an office in Noida, and suddenly, the vibe shifted. From what my friend told me, the company seemed to be struggling financially. Projects weren’t coming in at the expected rate, and before anyone could process what was happening, they fired 20-30 employees—on a phone call. No warning, no proper notice, just a cold dismissal.
Then came the truly bizarre part. One of my friend’s colleagues got a call from what seemed like a job portal. The HR on the other end asked if he was looking for a job change. He casually said “yes,” thinking it was a recruiter. An hour later, the same HR called back—this time identifying themselves as his company’s HR. They told him, “Since you’re looking for other opportunities, we’re letting you go.” Just like that, he was out of a job.
Now, everyone in the company is terrified of picking up calls from unknown numbers, afraid it might lead to their termination. My friend and his colleagues are walking on eggshells, unsure of what the future holds.
This made me realize how harsh the IT industry can be. On social media, we see influencers showing the glamorous side of being a software engineer—cafes, bean bags, flexible hours. But the reality can be far from that. Companies will do whatever it takes to cut costs when times get tough, and the employees often bear the brunt of it.
If you're considering a career in IT, don’t just believe the Instagram reels or YouTube vlogs. Prepare yourself for the challenges and uncertainty that come with it. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
