What’s the obsession with negative perception of quitting without an offer?

I am currently serving my notice period (90 days). Had decided earlier to quit and then look for a role so that I can job hunt in relative peace without worrying about job performance (high impact and demanding role). Was interviewing with a bunch of startup’s and almost every hiring manager and HR asked about why are you quitting without an offer? Same people when I was interviewing while working were concerned about the 90 day notice.

Is this considered as a concerning behaviour? Or just a negotiation tactic.

Also, what is a correct response to this question in your opinion? The truth seems incredulous to these folks.

A badass response to this question would be: I am confident of my skills and the value I add to any company I work for. I will get an offer in 90 days, it's a good enough timeframe for me and my current employer because I can put to closure my existing tasks on time, along with KTs and they can look for another candidate too. To support why you left add reasons like stagnation, lack of learning, etc.

I quit my job in Feb 2023 (start of the tech recession) without an offer in hand but managed to secure a job fairly quickly - while it was worrying I was just confident.

It really depends from person to person and conditions that individual has in their personal life.

Their concern could be that you are hiding an offer and actually just offer shopping.

I am assuming you are relatively new to the industry. (<5yrs).
A while back getting a job isn’t as easy as it is. Even considering the current situation.
And that too getting a job at a company you appreciate. Many of us are still influenced by this thought process.
However I do understand how it looks so negative.
But from my experience, everyone who asks just are projecting their fear onto you.
If you’re confident about your skills don’t let this noise affect your mental peace

If you are quitting, why are you worried about job performance? The HR might have some motives for digging but it general its not considered negative rather dumb. You can slack off at your work, get exta 2-3 month pay while you find a job. Unless u find slacking off at work unethical.

Slacking off is not an option. Revenue role with daily KPIs. Plus diwali season hitting. But I get the gist of your answer.
