Whole situation is stupid, influencers should have taken care while teaching.

Not blaming the people, they will do anything if someone suggests way to get job or noticed. Specially in such times.

blaming the entire thing on video creator is also wrong. I watched the video, she no where encouraged students for open source or told them that open source would bring them jobs. It was a simple git/github tutorial. Moreover, the video is 5 months old, which implies the spam is coming from one particular group of students maybe from the same college/some other coaching etc. It's more the students' fault than the video creator's fault.

This incident is happening since many years when people started recomending contributing to open source as a way to get job/noticed.

This recent readme incident got blown up because on Twitter started complaining and primegen made video on it.

Open source maintainers have been complaining about fake/low quality PR since last 3-4 years

The problem is that there are way too many people trying to get into IT because it pays well.. and the current job market being what it is, people turn to YouTube on how to get in. And these influencers who maybe got into fanng companies from campus recruitment during 21-22 are trying to sell courses on how to get in.. and minting money. Someone over on reddit calculated an estimated 10cr revenue for one such popular influencer who has paid courses. Makes sense why they left their faang sde role in just 8 months. Selling courses on how they got the job nets a whole lot more.

YouTube Influencers has made this situation a mess. First they made the content promoting open source as a way to get job, now they are making content on why not to open source.

I think we should change it to make “meaningful” updates and not just updates. Ppl teaching this in videos need to add a disclaimer advising folks not to do this senselessly.

Indian SDEs will do all DSA and System Design chatter but cannot create any real value

Indian SDEs on LinkedIn & Twitter are some of the worst engineers you will ever find across the real world. Their typical value lies around:

  • Cracking a FAANG/MAANG or Product company.
  • Make an announcement on LinkedIn & Twitter an...
