Why are startup folks so entitled?

I'm seeing so many posts where startup employees are cribbing about things like layoffs, work culture etc etc. Doesn't seem like they have perspective on everything it takes to build a startup. I've built a failed startup myself and have immense respect for founders who are grinding it out there in such difficult recessionary circumstances.

And then you have so many of the engineers and PMs cribbing about basics without talking about important things like learning growth, building for the future etc. Why such myopia? I work at a big tech and envy the speed at which startups move, the big responsibility everyone gets to handle, the fast career growth. All these things are being cribbed about. They crib about founders wanting more. Their job is to ensure success, not to give lifetime jobs to entitled people. They have more headaches you can imagine. In my small startup I had a million headaches. I can only imagine how hard it must be to run larger ships. Is everyone joining a startup these days looking for a get rich quick scheme?

If you can’t run a business that lets people have a normal life then you’re the one who thinks they’re entitled to employees. Businesses must take risk, employees don’t. Stop your whining that people won’t support shitty business plans

Why work at a startup if you want a normal life? The problem is wanting everything without wanting to make sacrifices. College toppers also give up on a lot and don't have a normal life. Startups are like that. And folks without ambition shouldn't even join them.

All jobs need to be decent. We can’t say “these jobs are hell on earth” If a startup is so mismanaged that it’s bad for work life balance for the employees it’s unlikely the founder is smart enough to run a focused product that’s going to be successful

Both enthu cutlet founders and self absorbed employees are zero interest rate phenomena.

entitled? that's cute :)

Let me tell you what 90% of Indian startups mean -

  1. No or less than market pay because it's a start-up
  2. Work long hours because it's a startup
  3. Hard deadlines because the founder changed their mind about the product, but still wants you to deliver on time because hey it's a startup what do you expect?
  4. No job security or even policies to defend yourself when the founder just does what they want, because what're you gonna do? it's a startup!
  5. Working with interns or freshers as colleagues because the founder believes one senior dev is enough :D

Most founders are emotional babys who only care about their topline and valuations and regardless of how many employees they burn through in the process.

You want risks? try joining a startup as an employee. You'll have bills to pay, won't get time for your life and loved ones and at the end of the month, get paid peanuts if at all your founder hasn't pulled some shady stuff or fired you with no severance.

We did it again, we let yet another startup founder whiner troll juice grapes at our BP's expense. This BDSM enjoyer wants to crib about Amazon, but says hasn't got a job in 6 months at a startup. Either he sucks or either nobody thinks he's worth the Amazon moolah in his favoured startup. Some dude made a post a while back about startup salaries being unaffordable. Abay yaar capitalism hai, Darwinism hai. Agar tumhara startup sach mein itna faadu hota toh Zerodha choddo, ek quarter profit to book kar hi Diya hota. There's plenty of peeps who'd love to work for a profitable company. Any startup founded who hasn't booked a profit should not come and gyaanchddo about what us peasants should do with our lives. No tumko koi puruskar nahi deraha for raising capital and running a startup. Mere neeche wala panwadi tumse zyada PAT thokta hai

Bruh, being profitable company is not enough. I've been looking hard for people who can take ESOPs and equity because our salaries are low and we can mostly afford just part timers at the moment.

No one cares about ownership in the startup they work at, at least 80-90% of entry to mid level folks would prefer fixed comp over anything.

Also, booking a profit isn't that difficult either. It's staying in profit and growing net margins over time that's the real challenge. Requires much more focus on unit economics and discipline.
