10 things Recruiters will NEVER admit to candidates:

1/ We already know who's getting the job. But we just have to treat you as a backup without telling you 2/ I did not read your entire resume 3/ Your rejection wasn't really about you 4/ I forgot to follow up 5/ The "TO-BE-OFFERED" salary was decided before you even interviewed 6/ I am forced to say "We will keep you resume on records for other opportunity" 7/ Hiring managers are the bottleneck - not us 8/ We're constantly under pressure to fill roles fast - not perfectly 9/ We prioritize EASIER candidates - available, interested, fits in budget that kinds 10/ Sometimes - we post jobs the job doesn't even exist - we were asked to build a pipeline Bonus: 11/ You could have negotiated for more or asked for more salary

Recruiting isn't as clean and transparent as it should be. Now mull on that.

One of the most unproductive and useless job is HR, along with program manager

ZippyJellybean

Program manager highly depends on the company/project.

Just for clarity - HR and TA is not the same :)

been treated as a backup multiple times. recruiter ghosts after final round. what do you recommend? keep interviewing get multiple offers and choose one?

GigglyUnicorn
GigglyUnicorn

That’s what most would suggest you to do. Since the system lacks integrity. I however believe just cause the system plays dirty one doesn’t need to stoop to their levels.

I have been in this situation so let me tell you this.

  1. Just try to get that 1st offer by any chance.
  2. After you are in notice period and you become an immediate joiner, you can leverage this point to get the offer. If you say I will join in 10/15 days, that has a great impact.
  3. lower your budget for your 1st offer, for them it will be an easy bet, and for you will get multiple chances to negotiate with other companies.

As someone who’s been a hiring manager countless times, thoroughly agree with each point 👍🏽

DancingDonut

Yes... That's true but ultimately dependence lies on the hiring manager. So, HR or Recruiters cannot not be blamed except point 2 and 4

SnoozyQuokka

Of course.. accepting the blame 😛

Sad but all of the 11 points are true

Idk where I am lacking. My resume is well-formatted, startup experience, good skills, good projects, overall skills, open-source contributions, certifications and still not getting interview calls. Even when I get the call either the position is freezed or they ghost.

SqueakyNarwhal

On point 11- the recruiters often tells me the offer is take it or leave it. How do I negotiate then ? Should I walk away and risk losing the offer ?

BouncyPotato

You must have another offer in pipeline in order to negotiate powerfully.

It's a white lie A lot of these things would hurt being an ordinary candidate in a sea of others & well referred/familiar candidates.

Job search is one of the moments where the applicant has just so much hope, dreams, aspirations. They get crushed one after the other via rejections. It has made me doubt myself whenever it's happened. But then that one thing works out.

TAs just need to be nice while it's happening. Being nice, honest, sharing helpful tips. Not ghosting, not leaving on read, not asking for my salary slip and then never replying.

Reflection: 2024

1/ Ghosting hurts, but ghosting back hurts more (and is absolutely justifiable revenge) 2/ No amount of market data will make a hiring manager agree to a realistic salary band 3/ The most effective tool in recruiting is still... empathy ...

Ever wonder why recruiters have no problem calling you to say "Congratulations, you're shortlisted" and then talk about next steps but would rarely call back when you are rejected. They would rather send an email.

Why is that? Do they choose sending rejections via email as an easy way out - cause of the volume? Is hiding behind emails WAYYYYY easier? Is the basic mindset that .. anyways X is/ are rejected, why waste time there? Isn't that mindset...

Recruiters why do you Ghost candidates?

Dear Recuriters,

What fun you get in ghosting candidates? If you have no answers from your management you can inform the same. Now don’t say you have lot of job to do. Candidate experience is also your job isn’t it.
