Has anyone noticed how common “Follow ups” is becoming in the workplace?

Huge amount of your work hours goes only for “Follow ups”

Like you literally have to follow up for the smallest things. 

Why do I have to remind people to do their part?

Ex: I have 1 member who I have been following up for 8 Months for a work that can be done in just 1 day. 

And he is not the only person I have been following up.

Imagine guys, how unprofessional and danger this is to work culture & Company Growth.

They talk about restuarants alot. I think 60% of their conversation is around which restaurant or pub is "cute" or "vibes".  
 But that might be a Bangalore thing. 
 Also they watch alot of Indian OTT and nothing else.

Even though it may seem tough to do especially in a country like ours where one is easily replaceable by lots of other people.

However the same thing we have to remember that as an employee we are always replaceable.

But we are not at all replaceable as a family member or friend or bae or an individual.

So we should always focus on keeping things in balance and never ever prioritise work over health.

Even though we may feel we are too young or fit to survive all this, but once we start ignoring health; it turns into an unfortunate continuous cycle difficult to break out from.

How the F do I deal with overworkers?

I'm also like this brother. But why I work like this? 
 I come from a small village in India . Haven't got proper education or exposure. Not born with silver spoon and this is the only way to feed our family. We too have emotions like you, but sacrificing everything for our future and family. I strongly disagree with @Elon_Musk. Usually, only people who don't work hard do like that.

I am working as SDE 1 in a good Indian startup. It's getting toxic day by day. Late night workings like 3AM and working on weekends is normalised like anything. Since I am new to IT ( no sort of politics never) and have almost 2.5 Years of experience, I am facing issues in getting credits. Last appraisal cycle in January, I was nominated for promotion but wasn't given to me, reason: you have not worked with architect and he was making decisions. In that case, architect should have been distributed tasks to us. 

one SDE3 is leading one of the projects ( not a big one ) and manager/architect is not much interested and never join any standup or retro, I have contributed immensely to that. Now since it is completely driven by sde 3 , he takes updates from us and show his work infront of seniors and director + announces like his work and seldom we get thank you in threads. Like if you did one function or wrote complete flow, for both thank you. Because of all these reasons, my work is not getting recognised. There is no one in team to help in this. 

Whenever a manager or Architect show cases some features or release, it's pretty evident that his team has done it but when a sde 3 does it, it is not the same. It conveys the message all or 90% work is done by him. 

I would like to take some suggestions from my seniors and fellow mates here.

I can't leave or switch right now due to some critical persona reasons.

Sorry if it feels like a vent but better be this than nothing else. This has been a slow year for me, I look everywhere and people are doing better than me. Being a fresher who had his offer revoked was already a hard blow but I somehow got a job at an MNC but even at such a low salary I'm being overworked and giving them more output than they deserve.

I'm slowly heading through a burnout or might be going through one and it's not good when I'm supposed to be so active learning new stuff but here I'm just churning out wheat like a slave. But this might not be a cry for help,I just wanna make myself aware of where I am and it's so much more than just these money-hungry sharks who hired us talking abt ethics that you should not be working for money but cause you can and enjoy. Ig I need steps to uplift myself I'll be back again tomorrow with more questions than these rants.

How do you guys dissociate from office shit once you log out and not let your job be your personality. I am glad I joined grapevine so I can write about  all the shit that goes on and try and have an actual life outside office.

I have observed and experienced the way IT engineers and many other similar professionals are working a lot, spending nights and day, constantly hooked onto laptops, many of us are losing a lot of hair, have dull skin and face a lot of other issues. 

There are a lot of issues that we don't observe like fatty lever, cholesterol, vitamin deficiency, back problems and many more. These problems don't surface in 4-6 months or a year. They will be there when we maintain unhealthy lifestyle over couple of years. 

Have seen people in 35 looking like 50 with grey hair, dull skin and unhealthy. Have seen a lot of people spending day and night on laptop voluntary even after having kids. I am 100% sure no family would want to see you guys working all night. What these people will tell their family is I have a lot of work when it's not the case

Working for a Big 4 company has been terrible. They don't care about work-life balance; they treat us like dirt. 

They think it's okay to work even when we're sick. I start early and finish late every day, and they say it's normal. If I log off before 7, they act like it's a crime, saying, "Even bosses work late, so why can't you?" They even expect us to work on weekends, like it's no big deal. There's no real teamwork; everything feels controlled. I end up with all the work. The bosses are just as bad; you can't talk to them about your problems. Even if you're struggling mentally, they want you to work 12 hours a day. And getting a day off? 

It's like winning the lottery. This job is ruining my mental health. I can't sleep at night worrying about going back to work the next day. They don't care about us; they just want us to work non-stop and forget about our personal lives.

Is FIRE the latest obsession because people have no other passion in life? Is it because they have aced school, college, High package(due to recent surge in salaries) and now don't know what is the next mission in life?

One argument is that they want freedom to do great things, but as I see the drive to do great things comes when people are put in constraints and difficulties. Not when they have freedom..

Why is everybody chasing FIRE?

Everyone wants Fire because they understand all that hustling and work for your passions is bullcrap and chilling and enjoying life is a much better alternative.

It's infuriating how everyone's advice to deal with layoffs is side hustles, wasting your life away to constantly upskill and reducing spending. Basically everyone here is saying "live life like shit to appease your corporate overlords" as if layoffs are OUR fault?

Instead, why aren't we seeing any advice on the lines of:

Build expertise in something while you're an employee and later start your own company/business/consultation on the basis of it. This will increase competition within businesses and will force them to treat their employees like humans. This was kind of the reason why things were generally good for employees from 2021-22 because all the startups popping up increased competition for labour.

Or if your employer lays a bunch of people off and starts giving the rest of you their workload, simply refuse! Don't work extra long or extra hard. Get the employees together collectively and make everyone, or at least the majority refuse to entertain these outlandish demands from your employers. What are they gonna do? Fire you all and lose their business? And if that's not going to work, just do everything very poorly and if you're asked about it, just cite that there is a lack of manpower needed to get quality results.

Basically, why have we collectively decided to take the short end of the stick and make our lives miserable when we should instead force employers to face consequences of THEIR OWN poor strategic planning? Why aren't we even discussing ideas for, let alone working on protecting our own best interests rather than interests of those who are screwing us over?

I am fed up here as I don't see accountability anywhere. 
There was a Telugu Movie starring Mahesh Babu where he being CM says, in foreign, people are responsible and accountable and they made their lives beautiful. How amazing, right? I truly resonate with that thought

We lack accountability in everything we do.
- if something goes right, it's us, if wrong, it's them!
- We don't hold our govt politicians on their promises, on delivering things of value
- Companies go on screwing us, we don't give a damn. Refunds are processed without timelines, cases in country are backlogged for years and years
- We cannot even keep our cities clean, our air pure and our water drinkable and we are least bothered by it
- We cannot maintain our own infrastructure like Buses, railways, trains. We fucking are stealing mugs from railway toilets due to which it's chained (wtf!)

We don't want responsibility and no one should question us.
How are we really supposed to grow?  
Stringent laws in place helps with accountability of companies who at all times think how can I squeeze more money from people and screw them
Accountability keeps everyone in check.
