Upwork is better. It will take time initially. I would suggest making personal projects side by side to add somthing in your portfolio.

You can try coursehero but I think it will aslo be same. Alternatively you could try some content writing internships/freelance. Try some coaching nearby college they sometimes give decent amount for teaching. Try bidding for some unique demands on freelancing websites. Whatever you do it will take time and energy, if earning is really not that important then better to focus on your preparation you can earn much better in future.
