MBA with 3 YOE in Business Analytics role. I want to pivot in Bs Strategy role. Somewhere I can build strategies to help the business grow. It could be a startups CXO office or a top global consulting firm. Please suggest how to go about this?

@QuietStaff10 you're already into Strategy if you understand business and can go deep to solve challenges and scale. Look for companies who are operations heavy that's where you can enter easily with your experience.

I personally like Product Management role. Strategy means business planning, business analytics, cost related projects, P&L, operational excellence.

Strategy role is more dispensable. It's tougher to break into as compared with PM roles. Strategy roles usually asks for tier 1 MBA.

Strategy has more power as it's horizontal in nature. Strategy is not for kinds.

Hi All

I have 2.5 YOE as an analyst, currently working as an senior product analyst with CTC of 15L fixed + 5L ESOPs.

I have only been in product since start of career and have a set path to becoming an APM at my firm by next cycle in Dec.

Recently I wanted some building experience and I have built a few web and mobile apps and I found coding is very interesting.

I’m having thoughts about switching careers because of 2 reasons:
1) Money -
although I believe I’m underpaid (cause I received offers of 22L fixed for role of product analyst in past but chose not to switch because of market volatility.)

But in long run, I believe being tech is going to make a lot more money compared to product roles (I have friends with 1-2 YOE making 26L fixed) and the remote opportunities.

2) Skills
Product is mostly soft skills and tech is more hard skills driven. With amount of layoffs in PM roles, I think tech is just a safer bet. Also given I don’t hate coding. I think I would happily code compared to doing things like user calling/ making review decks/ following up with other teams meticulously/ writing PRDs.

One specific question I have is: what are things in tech role that are not very fun to do but still part of JD?

I've been in startups for the last 8 years. From Series B/C onwards to even a unicorn, over time worked at 3. 
One of them was an outright scam, raised many millions of $s from top investors, and then ultimately died. 
Also close with CXOs at decent sized startups, and there is a pattern out there. 

A few thoughts:
1. Being a startup founder is tough. There's pain. Some people thrive in pain. AKA Masochists. Know how to spot a founder who works 15 hours a day because they love their vision vs. somebody who works 15 hours a day because they're masochists. These people thrive in pain, and hence love to see you miserable as you slog away the hours under their leadership. 

There is absolutely no vision for the future that they have. They do it for the fame, money, and cause a lot of pain in the process. Nothing good comes out of it. Investors love this breed.
   
2. I wish I'd done more than just leave the scammy startup. At the point, I decided against whistleblowing. Because I thought there's so many people employed here, they would all be impacted. Over time, 200-300 people more joined after I left. Once the scam was caught, all of them lost their jobs.
   
3. I'm not a coder. I'm a generalist. Over time, my pay grew but not in line with my peers who went into consulting/VC and then came back to big tech/startups. Over time, you disadvantage yourself if you stick around as a generalist in startups for too long. The next team pays you at some premium over the last one, there's no step jump. 
You need to somehow find a successful startup early, and genuinely, that is impossible to game - even VCs have to bet on 20 to get it right.

These are a few disjointed thoughts. I hope they give some insight.
My only takeaways:
- If you work at a scammy startup, don't stand it. At least, don't stick around. 
- I earn lesser than my peers (tier 1 undergrad), but I regret nothing. I love my work, and I'll never get over the kick. I cannot imagine working at a larger company ever again.
- Ultimately, you have to be optimistic. Believe that India will grow, good founders will come around, magic will happen ❤️

This is not a question for the cocky new grad in the overvalued startup, but for the few seasoned PMs that still reply out here.

Where do PMs go after they peak?

By peaking I mean arriving at a GPM or Staff PM position at the top 10-15 companies (you can do your own ranking here).

Nobody has the true statistics but I will use the assumption that 75% (debatable) of those who peak, will get laid off within 2 years from their ‘peak role’. The remaining will be able to progress into DoP and VP in the same top company or another in the top 15.

Where do they go then?

I am pretty positive, from experience, that they don’t go any up.

Do they go down the ladder of new startups for titles and ending up in the worst ones after being laid off 4-5 times? Do they quit all together?

Do they open a farm?

Do they start their own startup?

Where Do PMs Go After They Peak?

I have been on this journey for a long time now. Lots of failure comes with loads of learning. Each step or initiative I took has helped me grow as a person, the business guy (ed-tech, media space), and also in terms of technicalities (full-stack product management, hardcore hands-on into technology and I love user experience)

5 years of failure (Entrepreneurship) AMA

I was super curious for product management roles and switch to startups was one of easy bets, my current role( 3 yr work ex as implementation consultant)  in B2B  involved customer interaction and working on requirements on OOTB product,but back then i didn't appear many interviews, i wasn't actively applying but with recent scenario of all layoffs and startups fundings, what should be a good strategy now? I am a 2023 passout btech graduate. Currently I am working as a full time SDE (Full Stack) in a well established startup (8 years old , Series A funded). It's been nearly half year here.

My compensation is 10.5 lakh base + 4.5 lakh performance bonus + free lunch and snacks + Insurance (Including parents) benefits 

I am pretty good at DSA (around 2000 rating on leetcode, 4 Star at codechef in 2nd year itself, 2000+ dsa problems)

I have worked in 2 startups as an SDE intern during college days and completed 5 internships overall out of which one was a US based startup. Also, I have many publications under my name over the internet.

I had many offers when I was graduating from college.

Most of the time people say, "Hey, you have done so much so Why are you not working in a big tech". Well I always wanted to work for big tech during college days but after I started working in startups my thought process changed  as here I got the ownership of the product.

Now it has been nearly 1 year since I started working in startups. Should I give it a try for big tech now?

I am in a product strategy role where I am working with the founders and leadership team.
I have done engineering and MBA from tier 1 colleges.
I have 2 yrs of pre MBA and 4.2 yrs of post MBA experience. My Annual compensation is the range of 35-40 lpa.
Post MBA, I have done a startup for 1.5 yrs, worked in 2 unicorns for 1 yr each.
In a serious B funded startup right now with 9 months of experience.

Right time to switch?

Hi! 

I have had about a decade's worth of experience mostly in the ops-biz side of things. I've been part of the 0-1 and 1-10 journeys of some very successful startups in food-tech, fitness, ride hailing etc. In my current org, I was hired for a business role (I was the 5th employee here), but as the product team was formed, I transitioned into a Product role. It's been a few months into the role, and things like roadmaping, wireframing, design etc are coming in intuitively to me (surprisingly!).

Now here's the thing - I feel I need a salary correction (given the transition to Product from Biz), but I don't know what is the salary band for SPMs. 

Do note, my org is not tech-first, infact is a subsidiary of a hospital chain and so I'm not really expecting them to match VC backed startup/tech salaries. But even then, given that I lead an entire pod, what would a good (non-inflated) SPM salary look like?

Is tech an essential if you want to make it big in product, especially in India?
I understand, people from any background can enter product, but in the long term does being from a tech background play an important role in determining your growth?

I understand people would say 'nah' that's not the case, however the stats point towards something different.
(The analysis could be a bit skewed as well since earlier product was purely seen from a tech perspective)

I will start with mine
Background - 
8 years in tech 
3 company switches 
Sabbatical of 1 month, 3 month and 6 month between each break.
Personal experience - quite enriching. Though there was panic and anxiety of not having a job during the period, it truly helped me take a step back, reassess my career trajectory, and mostly just Destress and re prioritise

Every now and then i loose my true love for tech and product and the sabbaticals helped me to rediscover that by just reading about technology that was not outcome driven ( like for switching a job) 
Quite rewarding each time in terms of salary jumps also. I think i was able to make a better case for myself at a particular position just because i had more time to process stuff from last job. 
It also helped me make better decisions for next thing which has in general helped me shape my career better ( i think atleast)
