Folks, seems that a lot of IT companies will soon decide how many leaves to give based on location / state - so the lucky chaps in Noida (UP) will get 40 days of leaves (in addition to fixed holidays) and the unlucky folks in Mumbai will just get 26 days.

How many startups are getting year end leaves to recharge yourself?

I am interviewing with an early stage startup in Gurgaon. As part of their leave policy, they offer only annual leaves which you earn at a certain rate every month. They do not offer any sick leaves or casual leaves to employees. Is that even legal? Have you heard of similar policies elsewhere?

I don’t see anything wrong with this. It’s clear that the agenda is not to give additional leave benefit, but to normalise women taking period leaves. At present,  women usually use a different reason (headache/fever/backache etc) to apply for leave, while the actual reason is period pain/discomfort. Not every step is meant for a material benefit, you have to see the intangible value to the society.

In my company we have 1 leave per month. Basically after working all January a leave will be credited in February just like our salary and we get 12 leaves per month only (PTOs).

Just wanted to know why and how come our companies have horrible WLB and cultures compared to western counterparts. Is it the fault of the employees for accepting whatever and acting like sheep or is it just the mindset of the senior management to treat their subordinates the same horrible way they were treated as some sort of sick rite of passage ?

I was raised abroad and I always thought there’s something called annual leaves where you take PTO for a month apart from your sick / casual leaves. However I started working in India and damn when TF do people have time to do things apart from coming to office and getting burnt out?

First of all government can't do shit. I know you are a European law loving crazyhead since layoffs in Europe are avoided to due to pro-employee laws. But I want you to remember that the current layoff environment where companies struggled to layoff in Europe hasn't gone unnoticed by companies. If companies feel that pro-employee laws are too strict, they will simply close their European offices and open shops in Eastern/African/Middle Eastern/South American nations. Just because there is a law does not mean that companies will keep on following it. And as it is European offices are some of the most low ROI centres of development due to so many holidays/relaxed work culture/zero impact projects. Europe is fucked unless Europe resorts to war against Africa/East/Middle East/South America.

Got to know through my network that Brainly india has asked the entire team from their MD to all junior folks to go. Reason - sudden change in strategy.. they didn’t let the product even launch.. the team was in full swing prepping.. impacted folks 30+ or around that number.. within 6 months of hiring everyone.. while in the interviews they promised 5 years runway.. long term strategy for india.. ceo didn’t even apologise.. they come hire Indians and let go at the drop of a hat.. the employment contract said that either party have to give 3 months notice to resign.. so that’s what they did they are giving 3 months pay not in one go but month on month and after that nothing. No severance pay, no bonus paid to eligible employees, no help in finding jobs , no mental health support, medical finishes in 3 months.. in this time when hiring is on global freeze they have treated Indians like puppets come hire and fire when you want, they have money in bank account a runway for 18-24 months.. still they couldn’t hold on to india team.. heartless way of dealing with junior folks how will we find jobs

My job requires travel so I do get to spend time abroad.

The last cycle, I ended up making an extra 20L from all the leave encashment paying out at once. That's now worth 24L from a small cap MF.

Why does anyone bother with leaves if you are planning to retire before 40? I want to quit working while I'm still healthy.

Hi all smart folks out there, I have been wondering for so long as to why did Indmoney's growth stagnate?  They were the first one to launch a comprehensive financial tool and had a freemium model for Advisory. 


What all have been the reasons? And if you used to be a user of the app, what made you stop using it?

My company has an unlimited leave policy. Also the company recently laid off my coworker for taking too many leaves. What's going on here ?

The “unlimited” leave policy does not mean you can go on leave for an unlimited duration, no? It’s obvious there should be a reasonable balance.  
  
 It doesn’t help that the unlimited leave policy saw a majority of the folks take lesser leaves. When you have a fixed set of leaves and lapsing, people end up taking leaves just because the count is there.  
  
 And another reason is that you get encashment for remaining leaves when you’re laid off or when you quit. With unlimited leaves, the company saves this cost.  
  
 It’s criminal to think that any company would make policies that favour their employees. All policies favour employers at all times 😊

Lately, I have been thinking very deeply about my college days when the Flipkart story had inspired the entire lot of my batch at IIT-D. We were starry eyed college kids who wanted to do something innovative in India and break away from the "three" most popular moves after IIT:

1. UPSC
2. MBA
3. MS/PhD abroad

I proceeded to then work in various Indian startups and noticed an alarming thing. I began to realise a pattern across all my stints:

The initial founding team does exceptional work innovating, they excel at what Thiel calls "Zero to One", the act of creation. I will concede that although most founders fail to innovate by often copying what worked in the west but the initial founding team usually excels in execution. It allows for initial traction as it breathes a fresh breath in the\ space that they are operating in.

Almost always, when Product Market Fit is "achieved"(whatever that means), the founders begin to deploy insane amounts of funds into growth. 

By definition, Growth is not a bad thing. But, I have been noticing that across all startups I have worked at( all raised funds from the largest global funds) that it comes at the expense of product building. And during this era of hypergrowth, the product starts to stagnate while focus becomes marketing and sales. 

I often felt that this was temporary. That once we reach enough scale, we would start to innovate again. 
But time and time again, the ability to innovate atrophies over time.
Rather than building something that has enduring value by executing faster than anyone, the focus becomes achieving growth at all costs. 

This ultimately leads to two outcomes:
1. The startup cannot sustain this growth and retention begins to look dire. The churn becomes unbearable and the startup goes out of business.

2. The startup gets acquired by someone bigger, allowing founders and investors to believe that they created value where none existed in the first place.

I am completely dejected at this.

My manager who is a European is going on a leave for 1 month now + 1 month in December + 15 days of official holidays and here I am hesitant to take a leave for even 1 day even when sick.

Did you face this hesitation and how did you handle it? I am reaching burn out level but i am unable to take leaves because of this hesitation
