 I think people should chill… in office people working hard and getting low salary… But I am the kind of person who only loves to surround people chilling like a founder… when I go to the office, I think it is less productive. According to me, working hard is not an option while working. People should chill chill chill , obviously, with smart work, go ahead of your limit to chill. 
 In office people love to work hard. why don’t they gossip about parties, foods, travels. 
 I work as a software engineer. Is it the case for all departments?

But I am the kind of person who only loves to surround people like founder working hard as f.. when I go to the office, I think it is less productive. According to me, chilling is not an option while working. People should work hard hard hard , obviously, with smart work, go ahead of your limit to achieve big. 
In office people love to gossip about parties, foods, travels, why don't they discuss higher life, future planning and how to achieve big.

Bit of background: 23, graduated from tier 1.5 CS degree. I’ve never worked hard in my life, can’t recall a day from past 6-7 years where I’d spent over 6hrs in a day doing something productive. 

I’ve been blessed with good problem solving and street smartness, cracked really good tier 1 companies without even prepping, got really interesting international achievements, got good communication skills. Most of exams etc I gave in my life, I scored high without prep. This is a lot of brag, yes, but now working at a corporate things are going downhill for me.

I’ve realised that hardwork beats talent every time,  people around me are getting ahead by working and doing productive things, whereas I’m spending most of time scrolling reels and watching yt vids. My manager and other seniors have mentioned multiple times that I’m not performing well and need to work much harder. I have set up really high standards for myself but I’m doing nothing to achieve them, I try to setup new goals and doing things but I know, that has never worked for me in my life. I envy people who are able to work multiple hours in a sitting and do those things again, everyday.
I’ve seen my dad working really hard as well, waking up at 4:30 for business, then working late till 12 for all my childhood. I really feel I’m going to be the failure, everyone has setup high standards for me, but I just can’t commit to anything.

I’m really in the lowest point of my life, need a bit of advice, thanks!!

I'm surprised to see on the comment section that people actually support this load of crap. 

To any newbies or freshers entering tech this year, don't follow this advice. These CEOs exploit your time to gain revenue and when the time is not good they wouldn't think twice before considering layoffs. Just do your job and go home to your life and family. 

This advice only applies to entrepreneurs who have huge stakes in the company. Because if the company do well they get millions in returns as dividends. As an employee, even if you work for 25 hours you only get the same salary. 

Don't follow any so called self procalimed entrepreneurs advocating for the hustle culture. You hustle for your life, not for your boss or your job.

More push towards grind and sacrifice.

What do you do outside of work? Are there any hobbies you genuinely love and don’t just do to pass the time? Do you have any secondary sources of income?

From what I have seen, most people in corporate lack ambition. They don’t have any passion, nor is there any will to do anything outside of work. While I completely agree there is nothing wrong with it, the sheer low percentage of people who are passionate about their life just astonishes me. Maybe I am expecting a lot and am wrong here. I wanted to know others’ opinions as well. What do you people think can be the reason?

I actually don't want to climb any corporate ladders. I don't care about job titles and don't need any accolades. 
 I just want to have income to fund my lifestyle, not be depressed working with assholes, help other people and be around good humans. That's it.

I have been pursuing some aspirational products like Apple Watch SE, Airpods Pro 2, PS5 etc. since a long time. I go to the Amazon page and add it to cart but then my conscience questions me as to is it worth spending so much on it? I earn decently and live in BLR but still I dont fully understand to give my mind a valid reason for purchasing a 40k Watch that shows time, some metrics and some automation. Also 20k for listening music, 50k for playing games.

It feels as if is it sane to spend much on these personal material stuff? How do you folks look at this while making purchases?

How do you justify expensive purchases to yourself?

For some ps5 is not about price, it's about their dream to buy since college days (many ppl I know bought it) and same goes for other stuff as well.

Hi guys, new to Grapevine and I have seen this as a common point here, on Reddit & Twitter than Indian software engineers actively hate in-office work on social media

Trying to understand why is that so. All of my college mates have joined in-office & most preferred that as well. I myself had a terrible learning experience in my remote intern & have had much more success in our startup when we are all together

I understand the pros of remote work, but why is the negative sentiment so strong suddenly? Is this a niche group echoing this

I've had the fortune of having worked in 3 countries so far. India is by far the most exciting place to be in 2024.
But there's something about our work ethic that just concerns me. In both white and blue collar.

In most other countries, I've observed people strictly sticking to the 9 to 5, working diligently in those hours - not wasting too much time on chai sutta breaks, instagram browsing, gupshup etc.

They work for 8 hours, then leave. And think about work directly the next day.

In India, most of us spend more hours - but very obviously very few of those hours are productive. In fact, I lately feel that too many people around me are doing even 2-3 hours of work on a good day.

We end up just staying around, passing time, and then go back home. When we could have achieved so much more.

Work ethic has fallen. Work hours have gone up.

We need to be more mindful of our actions, we need to work well at work, and then do well at home.

I think it's a function of being over populated. There are 1.5-2 people doing what 1 person should be doing, hence this effect.

Needs to be fixed, it's the sign of a major problem in the workforce. Thoughts?

We don't end up staying long hours because we need to. But because we have to, so that the manager doesn't feel like we leave the office by "half day".  
  Also, they have a leverage that they can shut their laptops at 5 and nobody will reach out to them. But here in India, managers do reach out for escalations, or make us attend lat evening calls because it's afternoon in Europe or morning in NA. The people sitting in Europe or NA are not made to wake up early or attend night calls to accommodate us during our actual 9-5.  
  People also chit chat etc. bcz they know for sure that they have to sit for long hours..so they need to take small breaks in the day. No one has the capacity to work 10-11 hrs without any breaks.  
  Here it would never be possible to have such a strict 9-5.

I have been talking to a few companies, across different size bands.
Only Indian startups seem to obsessed with full week WFO/Micromanagement.

A few years back, startups were known for being more flexible, now it just seems to be the reverse.

Why are Indian startups so obsessed with Micromanagement? i.e. WFO

I know a lot of folks will not agree, but when it comes to accountability (+ some integrity), the vast majority are really really behind. Those who show some are stomped up on as well.  
  
 The only way to get over this might be to micromanage. I'm not in support of it, but I myself have been seeing a change around me because of some people, a few others will also have to suffer from micro-management. Yes, it's not easy on me/my mind, but the work is moving a bit more.  
  
 I've seen this at a lot of places. I usually trust others with things, but the results have more often disappointed me. Now, I just delegate only of it's really required.

Am I the only one who likes working from office (Bengaluru)? I go to office every day, and it helps me to be more productive.

- There will be no distractions
- Team mates will be around, and if there is any queries, I can straight away ask them rather than typing a message or setting up a call
- Occasional chit chats
- Having lunch together
- being a part of all the conversations happening
- Managers works from office - a good rapport with him as well

- Free food
- Free Transport (can mates - another plus point)
- Good work set-up

- Meet new people almost every day
- Build/deepen real connections every day
- Interact with folks starting from entey level to senior directors or VPs regularly (L1 - L9 is the range mentioned here)


FYI: I moved to Bengaluru for work, although I've the option to work completely remote. 

One of my team member even mentioned that he has not yet been able to connect with the team member who has joined before me, like how he could connect with me.

I understand that once people have family, it will be difficult to manage everything. One of my team mate actually mentioned that, he used to do/manage everything properly before Covid, but it's kind of not easy/lazy since Covid.

I also realise that not everyone has the above perks, but still. 

Commute can be an issue. I travel 50+ KMs every day to and fro. I start by 7 am in the morning to morning traffic, and take around 75 minutes in the evening (I can survive the traffic without having to use my mobile 😂)

I do miss my family frequently, but I do have the flexibility to go home and stay a few days when I want. Staying alone in a service apartment is the only disadvantage as of now.

Recently the CHRO of my company called me into a discussion on improving  WORK LIFE BALANCE.  Wow. I just cannot understand. Look at this. 
1. Most companies work 5 days a week. (Except retail operations). So you get 52 weeks x 2. 104 days. 
2. 30 days annual leav
3. 9 days statutory holidays. 
4. Operational holidays. 3. 
145 days of 365 days corporate people don’t come to office. And in a hybrid format even more. 
It is these corporate vultures who want work life Balance. How can u balance your life if u r unable to do it in 145 days. 
So Narayana murthy is right - work hard like 80% of india. Who have almost no weekly off. Just saying.

The BS about work life balance

IIT grad here building a venture backed startup. I think 99% of folks here believe that venture backed founders are super entitled and in a much "cosier" position than employees

Just sharing a few facts about our journey so far if it helps anyone improve their perspectives-

1) Paying ourselves 33% of our campus salary & 60% of what we are paying to our employees (Talking about Pure Base Salary here, not including ESOPs)

2) Insane stress - You basically have to raise money to build (esp if its deeptech because of the high fixed costs) and there are predefined metrics you have to always chase, sometimes just beyond yourselves. 

Your product will be copied if it's good because well, they always have more money than you. You work 7 days a week for insane hours, chasing metrics required to be "afloat" 

3) 99% of venture backed startups result in 0 liquidity gain for founders. So basically in all likeliness, everything is for a net negative return compared to if we took the campus job

So, when you wholeheartedly bash founders as if they are sitting On a goldmine while you are toiling for THEIR gold Treasure, just understand that more likely than not, there is not really any gold but rather an irrational hope they are clinging to

Also, Yes-we pay above market to our employees (100% hike for the last one) but the truth is some startups just Can't afford it. And ironically, there is a much higher looking down on these startups with meagurely paid founders rather than giants like Tech Mahindra paying peanuts to their employees while having a 1000% salary hike for the executives. 

Yeah, most startups need to do better but please appreciate if someone is atleast trying to do better because trust me, it's INSANELY HARD.. 

The number of posts I see about Flipkart making hundreds millionaires is way too less than the ones I see about pinpointing at every single mistake early stage startups do & I just wanted to express my opinion on it
