A question to HR's.

So my friend had an experience with an HR from a service based MNC.

He had applied for a position in the company sometime back. So today, his profile got shortlisted and they called for an initial screening. The usual questions regarding experience, notice period etc, were asked. Then the HR asked the current and expected CTC. He mentioned his expectation and the HR said it was way too high and why was he quoting that much.

Then he said currently he has received multiple offers, so that if he passes the interview, he would like to have a better package, especially since this position included relocating from the candidate's base location.

The next question from the HR was, "Why are you still looking for a switch if you have already received offers and what guarantee is there if they provide him with the expected CTC but he decides not to join?"

He said, "Just because I received an offer doesn't mean I should stop looking at other opportunities, If an opportunity is presented to me, I would like to take it and finally decide what's best for me."

Then the HR said, "everything is not about money and he needs to consider other factors as well". Then my friend replied, "I understand your point, but I would need to do what's best for myself and my family as well".

Then they said they won't be going forward with his profile. He said, "It's okay, I understand" and the HR ended the call.

Sorry for the long story, so here is my question to the HR's here:

"If the 3 candidates are shortlisted for one open position, won't you choose the best candidate suited for the role?"

Then, why can't a candidate choose a firm that is best for them?

Candidates should have the freedom to choose the best firm for themselves, just like companies select the best candidates. It's a two-way street, not a one-sided affair. HR needs to understand this dynamic.
