Joining company which laid me off
I was in Zomato , and they laid me off in Nov last year. Now, my ex-manager called me to join the team as they have an opening now. Should I join again?
This time, I’d say put yourself first. Coming to your firing, your manager probably didn’t really have much of a say, could’ve been orders from the top. But if he’s calling you back, that means for some reason they’re giving priority to their ex employee (maybe performance was never the reason for the lay off). If it’ll help you financially , you can offer to join back but at the same time vigorously keep looking outside and quit the moment you get a better & stable offer. If you’re already financially ok and have a run way, pass on this and look out for a better job. Whatever you do, put yourself first this time

Not that easy to answer - you need to sill more beand. What were the reasons for lay-off (your performance or company performance)? Did Zomato take care of your when they laid you? Will there is be stability at Zomato? Do you owe it to your manager? Do you have a job? What is their offer indexed to last drawn at Zomato and your current?

Start seeing companies as contract work. You sign a contract, go all-in at work and enjoy the reward.
When priorities of you or your company changes - anyone can terminate the contract.
While the people you work - see them as your partners while working for the same goal. If they are awesome - don’t leave them. If they suck - find different partners (team).
Now to original question - if the company is restarting the contract and you loved your work, would suggest to join back.
Company contracts are not similar to human relationships. Don’t compare them.

Manager wants to re-hire you, then certainly he/she values you. If you will feel welcomed into the team - you should join.
Managers don’t have a choice when they fire. They are just given numbers to cut-off. They keep the folks who are bare minimum needed to get the job done.
Eg - in a team if there is an senior guy who is really at job, (say paid 60L) and a junior (paid 30L). If the ask is just to run the team in maintenance mode - it doesn’t make sense to keep that senior guy in the team so it makes sense to lay him off.
Also it is good for that senior guy to find a better role somewhere else where their skills can be better used. (That’s why you find senior folks in big companies compared to startups)
Ex Zoman here. You know how the culture there is. Unless you have no other option, avoid going back.

If team, work, compensation is all good then why not? You do know many big tech companies called back good folks and they did join back

Join.. only if they offer a ridiculous pay hike. There are lot of comments like dont go back to you ex.. etc.. but I think it like politics. There are no friends or enemies. Just profit. Get your pound of flesh. If they pay why miss it
Going back to an ex is hardly ever a good decision. At least make sure you are on better terms now.

Don't join, no never, don't even think about it
You will always be in the pressure to outperform the entire team thinking that if layoffs happen, you will be the one to cut out again.
Do you have a stable and good job now? Are you looking for a job? If you have a job and is seemingly stable with decent pay, don't switch.
Also is there a reason why you are called back? Like you knew a specific area well than others? Do you know about any ex colleagues who were laid off being called back?
Basically, think through this. Consider the offer only if you want to go back.
Don't have any emotions towards companies or managers. All act for their own advantage. You too should do that
If it's a better offer, better opportunity, then yes. It's a business relationship between you and your company. Only money and professional growth counts.

Ask for double your previous pay and now that you know the game, you are very likely to excel at the game, you must have thoughts right, if only I knew all of this at the beginning of my career/ at Zomato I would have done these things differently, you are literally getting a chance to do that.

If you have other offer options - prefer them because in your mind - one thing is always there ki they fired me one day and you will not give 100%
Other thing - if you joined than got any other offer join other company
