Done with doing good to others.

Lately a lady reached out to me on LinkedIn asking me if I could refer her to my company bcz there are multiple layoffs happening at her company. I did but then she wasn’t getting any calls then we had an opening in my team and so I reached back to her and said her about everything and that she would have to move in to Hyderabad if she is selected. She said she lost her mother last year and she is staying with her father who is working in Gurugram. I felt very sorry for her and convinced everyone in my team and finally everyone agreed and we started her interview process. Even at interview she didn’t perform well but then again I pushed the other person a bit and got her the chance. Till now she was behaving very good, now came the salary discussion and that’s when she started showing her true colour. She was at 11LPA and started asking 25LPA. For her performance she was a straight reject. She started acting very rude to everyone. And now I got a bad name in my team because even when no one was convinced I pushed for her. I am so done with these people. First of all in today’s time when no one is getting interview calls properly, someone out of pure kindness and good intent is helping others and people are like this. Finally decided to not entertain anyone ever. Screw kindness. Being good to others is the worst thing one can do now.

Don't stop being good, it comes back in leaps and bounds later in life.

However, only place you missed was not to provide straight feedback and base your decision for referral on sympathy.

Let's say she does join your team, do you think she'll be able to manage for long with mediocre skills?

True that. My team is extremely high performing. She got the offer letter yesterday. You know what’s the best part, when my leaders wanted me to talk to her to inform her that her amount is way out of the budget to give her an advise of a probable number she stopped taking my calls and bluntly said I informer HR, you check with her.

Yeah, don’t stop being good, but it shouldn’t have got anything to do with what comes later, or not. Read the poem “Anyway”.

One more point I have always noted is men really help only women in such cases in being good. Just a question. Would you help any man in such a scenario?

Of course I will. And I have helped people time and again even in scenarios I have vouched for people I do not know personally and none so far did something similar.

Bro you have quite some influence in referral process!! Mujhe le lo apni Team me, I promise to perform much better, and I am in Hyderabad only. And Salary expectation I will quote in advance only, so there is no conflict later on!!

On a serious note, you shouldn’t have pushed team mates on the technical experience part, since you didn’t know the candidate personally. And this is a one off incident with very selective experience, shouldn’t make you stop referral completely. Also, read the famous poem titled “Anyway”, it is my all time favourite poem since School days.

Try being good to males as well.

Boss. The whole point is not having a male/female battle. It is all about people not being grateful and changing intents when given an opportunity. You are certainly not aware of how many people I have helped, and this is not about bragging about it, it’s like if you have a chance to do good, then simply going for it. And if it were a guy too in her place I wouldn’t think twice before helping him too. I know for a fact a lot of people directly/indirectly helped me to be in the place that I am today, and I openly say about it, well I can’t help them back because they are already good great in their lives, but I can do is to help someone who I can so that I am doing my part better. Now about this girl, I felt bad because she has an attitude problem, which I think no one can do anything about. The whole point being, people should understand how to be grateful to others and not bring upon them issues because of their own actions.

Be careful of who you refer. I know that the Job market is tough, but that doesn’t mean that you lower the standards of hiring. A poor hire can often bring the whole team/product down.

It was more for a slightly higher than entry level position so we thought she could pick up given that she gets right pathway from the seniors.
