Evolution of the product role

Its been a few good years of product roles being adopted in Indian companies big & small, Yet they remain the most random wild cards.

From skewness towards just tools (SQL, Clevertap, Jira etc) to absolute monstrosity in 3 years exp + MBA + tech background for an APM role 🤡

Latest trend is domain experience. N years in Retail, Erp, Cloud etc.

Golden days of free entry and learning are over.

Let’s see how things go if the role even survives in its current form(s).

New PM playbook: very strong tech, project management: agile SDLC, jira/scrum, sql, web+product analytics tools, decent Ux design & research and a lot of documentation.

Chemical X: domain/industry: this will be a pain for people who prefer building a domain agnostic consulting style career.
Gotta pick sides now : /

Abe saalo 😅... Koi to sach bolo.... that PM is 24x7 grind/hustle role. From meetings, to PRD, to crafting safe update emails, to follow up with 3rd party contractors, to asking questions like "what's the update on this Jira?". PM was already a thankless job. Now it's a bundle of unmotivating "tasks".

I was ok n wealthy as an Engineer. As a PM I am more busy n less wealthy 😟

  1. Ye sab toh ‘needless to say’ wali category me ayega na? :P

  2. Based on my quick youtube binge on Ai agents and automations, this jira/click-up annoyance should minimize. Dekh ke toh laga Product role hi minimize hojayega :3

  3. Product mgmt is really Project & People mgmt in India, at large.
Proper first principles based core product ka kaam kar paana is rare. Rewarding though.

So true. it's been increasingly evolving into domain specific role. The company which I am working in, only hired because of prior experience in cloud.

The role is now more of a Technical PM than just PM. API Bano, system design karo, architecture banao etc.

Why does everyone want to get into Product?!

My reason was - I don't know how to code and I want to become a CEO/Founder one day. Product managers go on to become CEOs (said some unverified source in the distance) and there I was practicing cases and what not. Of course, I was youn...

Product roles are going down

Lately I am observing trend that product roles are going down, not many company believe in hiring product roles. At least small/mid startup wants CTPO roles and they want someone to play dual roles, primarily tech led products roles. Pur...

Longevity of a product career

Sharing some reflections on this:

  1. Product is not a function with a large hierarchy / multiple levels in the ladder. Managerial responsibility comes in very late in the product career and the spans are typically small (relative to o...
