Few Incompetent colleagues

Hey Viners, would like to know your prespective on the situation that if you face a bunch of incompetent colleagues who dont take their work seriously and the manager constantly asks you to maintain quality because of your seniority and you end up cleaning their work, how do you handle it ?

Make it black and white, non performers vs performers.

In your catch up with senior management reveal the incompetence of non performers and your effort effort to make it work.

By this conversation Your manager will get two take away

  1. You extra mile
  2. Non performers aspects.

Post the catch up with your manager have one on one with non performers and explain the scenerio that you have escalated it. Still they have chance to prove themselves.

This puts the non performers in pressure and possible good out comes.

Never make any work place toxic as non deserve it.

straight forward and clear communication is the key of any managerial role.

P.S: I am a VP in a tech MNC, and handle 400 + employees directly and indirectly.

Develop people skills bro. In all this world of tech skills coding ai we forget the most important skill which is people skill. That's the only important skill which is gonna help in long run.

I have also heard how Razorpay hires incompetent candidates from IIT Roorkee

The founder is also from IIT Roorkee so fingers crossed on that. What Ive found is in RZP Tech & Product everyone looks like they're super ambitious.

Are these the incompetent people you’re referring to?

The manager is just asking you to take care of the quality you do your work and talk to them over emails let them know what they have to do over emails and also let them know about the consequences and if they still fail to do so. Then it's your manager who has to decide.

Exactly. You're responsible for only your role. Don't take on your manager's job too. You're not paid for it.

And if you do create any unpleasant setting as some of the others suggest, know that it will reflect back on you down the line. Managers may not comment openly but they do notice

Problem isnt about their work ethic affecting me, the issue is , because of their poor work ethic my workload is increasing.

I will share my POV ... As they are hired they must have talent so u just have to figure out why they are not working or do they want to change their domain or want release from project ... Basically we all will be motivated to do some work if the rewards are good. So I will suggest try to find the reason or give them a reason to work...

Simply ask them to post updates in common slack group. Tag them in the same group over quality issues. Appreciate the one’s that are actually maintaining quality. Don’t be passive aggressive.

Make sure all the stakeholders are in that group.

Focus on your work. Get your work recognised. What others are doing is none of your business. If you can't all of it then communicate.

You are true, its none of my business. But its definitely my business if because of their poor work ethic, I face the ultimate task to cleanup.

Get their kids😎😂😂

I also face this problem while working in team for college projects. Most simple task I can do is, identify the weakest person in team and tell the prof about it. Done, then I don't have to confront him for small things.
Just tell your superiors about the situation and let them sort out things for you. At the end, you're also there for completing the assigned work and not get yourself burdened up with extra stuff.

Be bossy if the situation makes you do so!

Should you confront your manager about a colleague’s incompetence?
