Harassed by an Auto Driver in Indiranagar

Bangalore’s auto rides are getting out of control, and today I got a front-row seat to this insane bullshit.

So, here I am, minding my business, booking an auto on Ola. The moment it arrives, I’m literally walking out the door, and this guy starts blowing up my phone like his life depends on it. He said in the rudest, most condescending tone, "Come da. I will cancel!". Excuse me? I’m not running a race here!

Trying to keep things civil, I told him to go ahead and cancel if he’s in such a hurry. So, I did what any sane person would – I booked a Rapido.

A few minutes later, I step out, and guess who’s still hanging around at my gate? Yeah, Autowallah himself. But it doesn’t end there. The man blocks my path, shouting at me about how dare I book another ride while he was "waiting." I calmly remind him that he was the one who said he’d cancel.

He flips out, yelling about wasted time and fuel, and then, demands that I pay him the full fare. Not a penny was charged on the app, mind you, but now I’m supposed to cough up money for his bad attitude? The lauda-city.

At this point, I’m stuck between standing my ground or risking this lunatic escalating things even further. Feeling genuinely unsafe, I handed over the cash just to get out of there. But before he sped off, he delivered one final, lovely threat: "Don’t let this happen again. I know where you live."

Where’s the customer support when you need it? Nonexistent. Ola’s app is basically a black hole when it comes to reporting harassment or threats. If this is what we’re expected to tolerate, then consider me done with Ola.

So here’s the question: Why is it that we are expected to put up with this harassment? Why are there no immediate solutions to keep drivers in check? Ola, Rapido, whatever—it’s time to wake up and realize that passenger safety isn’t negotiable.

if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. I tried making a video but he tried grabbing my phone. Sharing ss before that happened.

I know you felt hassle but why didn't you fight for your right ,call the cops or keep arguing. Ok I know it is a new place or a new city but unless until you won't fight for your own cause no one's gonna help you, what did you get from paying him a warning as a reward? I know I may sound mad but if you let this happen stop fighting for your own right they keep doing this ,assuming this was in a broad daylight what if the same happens to you in the dark and what will you do?

It’s actually very common. Most well educated Indians are non confrontational

Nothing will happen by calling the cops , they'll only take auto wala side. Auto wala have union and they somehow control politics or plays a role . So never fight just flight when alone. And when in group then do whatever you wanna do!

The comment by the autowala, "Come da, I will cancel!", seemed off because no Kannada-speaking drivers typically use "da". My gut feeling was that he was from another state.

Even I think that’s true

It hardly matters where is he from . The prob is why ola Uber rapido don't take the responsibility of their respective drivers

You could have taken a picture of him and and his licence plate and threaten to call the police , if he didn’t get the f**k of out of your face , never give in to a bully. You could have told he wouldn’t be able to ride a cycle if his licence was cancelled.

Pepper spray and a knee to the crotch usually does the trick , every woman should learn some self defence like karate, and immediately get attention of the crowd and shame him publicly

Something similar happened to me a couple of weeks back. A really aggressive auto driver from Namma Yatri got mad at me for making him wait for 1-2 minutes. (I did apologize). When he did not stop screaming, I felt threatened. He was a pretty big man. Told him I'll cancel if he continues the behaviour. Then he lost it and demanded the money irrespective. More screaming followed. Full scene on the road. He also was encouraging me to complain, almost like he wasn't bothered about the consequences.

Bad episode. Very scarring. Namma Yatri was super supportive, calmed me down, offered to counsel/suspend him for sometime after proper investigation. But just the thought that an angry, impulsive man knew where I lived made me wayy too anxious. Conflicting feelings of "let's teach him a lesson" and "he can hurt you if he wants to"

Namma assured that they would tread cautiously. Yeah, that episode stays with me every time I take an auto.

OLA has become extremely shit for commuting. They do not have any customer support at all. Even if you press the emergency button during a cab ride, there's no support/response. And for autos they very clearly mention that they do not provide any customer support as they are just serving as platform for booking and hence take no responsibility. I usually avoid OLA nowadays, especially for auto booking.

The ride-booking business for OLA has definitely taken a backseat and will probably not come forefront anytime soon!

Scary Über ride experience today
