Incorrect. All the employer can ask for is a receipt signed by the landlord with a revenue stamp and the PAN number of the landlord in case rent paid per year is more than 100000.

As long as you have PAN, it doesn't matter whether you pay in cash or kind. If the HR/Finance doesn't accept, show him/her the middle finger. You can claim the benefit when you file the returns.

If you are receiving salary in your bank and you are paying rent in cash, that means you are withdrawing cash from your account and using it to pay rent. Give them transaction reference number of the cash you have withdrawn in place of cheque. Anyways who uses cheques now? It’s all online transfers - just give them the bank transaction reference number and say it’s for transfer (they won’t know whether it’s cash or bank trf and you can prove in case income tax dept comes asking for details

You can put the HRA component in the income tax portal and get a refund

You can claim HRA while filing returns but the probability of getting IT notice as your returns deviate from Form 16 is high as HRA knocks off good taxable amount.

Rental payment options

I remember seeing a lot of startups that give reward points for paying rent. Now that I’m married, rent seems to be the biggest constant expense for us every month. Can I earn some discount on this?
