Laid off last month and negative relieving letter

My employment was terminated last month from the organization’s side but they have put things like “his performance was average” & “he left the organization in his own accord” in the relieving cum experience letter.

I am not much worried about the performance part because I have good experience letters from my past organizations and believe would be the same in case of reference checks. Should I be worried about these?

Any suggestions on how to move forward with future applications would be helpful.

Don’t worry about it too much. The new company will ask for this during offer stage. You can explain the situation, with proofs if asked. Most companies will be ok with it and if you have done well in interviews, they will value your word more than the companies’. However, volunteer this info to your Hiring Manager. Nothing should be a surprise to them.

Should I mention this during initial HR round or final HR round? I heard few perspectives on why this should be cleared up in the initial levels of discussion itself. That clears the expectation from the start

Last HR round. Mentioning it earlier might prejudice the new company. We are only humans and hearing anything out of the ordinary changes our thought process. Let the interview evaluation happen on your skills without any other background info.

Also, they are likely to take cues from you in terms of how serious is the issue. If you treat it lightly, they will also do so. If you make a big deal out of it, they might too.

But why they did this? I mean generally company follows resign route - is it because they don’t wanna give you benefits of termination or actual attitude towards work?

They were forcing me to resign and on top of that reducing my notice to 3 weeks instead of 2 months. Most importantly there were no prior communication and it was out of the blue.

They agreed to give severance after I put it out on written that it’s a termination from their end but they were still streching the last working day to about 3 weeks. I said I am under no obligation to serve that and I was out in a week (with proper communication)

I am not sure what to make of it.

Got it. Highly recommended that once your FnF is done - name and shame them on social media as such companies will surely face the music of such tactics.

Don’t even tell recruiters that you have received termination letter, show your resignation or layoff email for proof
