I naively shared my salary with some of my school "friends" who were not in tech. I kid you not, one guy messaged me the very next day to ask for some money which I couldn't turn it down. Only share your salary with your close friends, never brag / mention it to relatives or other acquaintances!

I always say that i don’t have any cash which I actually do think tbh. I invest everything and am left with maybe 10k for the month. Any expenses are on credit cards. I clearly say that i am going to need these 10k for the month I can’t, sorry.

As freshers, mostly everybody has shared in my group, someone who got into bain as a fresher is getting 14.5lpa and to the one getting 3.5 lpa. I dont think it makes a difference, it depends on your social group, I have know these people since I was grade 3.

As I said bro, main inn logo ko 13 saal se jaanta hoon, thats why I have no issues in my social group.

I think jo log bolte hai nahi batane ko, woh khud hi apne so called friends circle mein out of lack of friends khete hai. Many people are with a set of people kyunki they are either new to city or dont have a decent social life, toh unsab par dependent hote hai which is okay initself but aisa kuch nahi hota nazar and shit if you know the other person really well.

Credit card ka cvv nahi chupa rahe ho, just your salary.

General advice, best not to share with anyone, even to an extent to your parents. There is basically no upside other than a bunch of jealous folk or their pity if you are in the lower end. Many others would guilt trip you into borrowing money.

As for professional circles it is good at times to share your salary with colleagues that you trust. There are way too many underpaid people and they don't realise it. But it is a tricky line to walk between sharing your salary and keeping it confidential so it doesn't bite you later. Platforms like Glassdoor, Blind etc have greatly helped in this regard but still I appreciated a senior dev who actually told me to leave when he knew about my salary and even helped me land a competing role in another company. I have since tried to help out juniors whenever I knew they were underpaid but still made sure that they were people that I could trust.

If their perspective about you changes when you share yours, are they your friends?
