I have been a little caught up with numerous things in my life lately and have finally found some free time to open up myself to new experiences. 

I had a wishlist of shows and movies that I wanted to watch but as soon as I start watching them, I get bored and feel like turning it off. 

No, its not the content
No, its not the genre
No, its not the actors
No, its not the taste either

This is pretty ironic as considering the fact that I have spent a fair share of my youth chasing academics and career, my heart had always craved for life experiences. I had to let go of the woman I loved simply because I was too focussed on my JEE. I wont be able to forgive myself for that EVER. It almost felt like I had lost a limb, without which , I would be rendered disfunctional. Thats a separate story tho.

Nothing excites me (yep nothing)
Nothing amuses me 
Nothing feels lively

I have no clue where my life is headed

I understand that as we age, our triggers of happiness change. I have put concious efforts into knowing what those new triggers are. But I cant find any plausible sources of happiness.

I am performing pretty well with my career.
Even got a double digit hike.
But didnt feel that kick of joy.

Have I approached a dead end?

Talked to the son of my Dad's friend recently. Brilliant kid has a good GPA from IIIT-H + 2 research internships and 1 summer internship at good companies. He still can't find a "good" company to get into. 
(Side Note: "good" implies a high paying job relative to last couple of years)

Apparently, most of his friends in other colleges are in the same boat. Massive pay correction has happened.

The undergoing rationale is that companies hired Class of 2022 with no restraint because the demand was really strong during their placement season in 2021. This appears to be directly correlated with quantitative easing in the US and a low interest rate environment that was conducive to fundraising for several Series A+ startups.

By the time Class of 2022 entered the market, everything changed and they felt some short term change. However, Class of 2023 is having a much tougher time. They are shoved into the job market in a time where demand is low and they are competing with kids who graduated last year. 

Ongoing consensus appears to be that a huge chunk of their batchmates are going to get their Masters abroad. Their hope is that by the time they graduate out of grad school, the economy will pick up and demand will be strong while they're poised to take advantage of that with bump up credentials.

Unfortunately, this also implies that many of them will end up in the CPT-OPT-H1B-Green Card hell.

This is really a tough spot to be in.

This is anecdotal but just wanted to highlight my observation that the recruitment is getting harder in general and multiple companies fighting for same good candidates. It's really nice to see green shoots considering how hard 2023 has been. The companies still laying off in 2024 are either doing recruitment in India or small startups that are anyway not going to last this entire year. Majority of the recruitment is being driven by captive centers being setup by startups from Europe and US. 

Good luck folks. Make sure you ask for higher numbers.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against high earners in this group who are doing exceptionally well and earning big bucks at young age. You have my admiration. 

Target audience of this post: Everyone else who is doing okay in their job, earning an average salary for their age. 

Why have I posted it?: To not feel I am the only one who is a normal regular person doing just average in his life in this hyper competitive rat race. 

My thoughts: I clearly remember the moment, it was April 2007, I had barely completed the board exams of class 10th and joined class 11th. It was my first week into class 11th when a fine looking gentleman walked into our class to make us think of our future career path. He was from a coaching institute for IIT JEE and AIEEE. He told us about all the high salary packages at these premier institutes. I excitedly told my parents about it. 

Like any middle class parents, they dreamt of their son cracking the exam and securing good placements from IITs/NITs. They enrolled me in coaching. I worked hard for those 2 years, 11th and 12th. But what was harder was the constant stress and pressure I was put in, both intentionally and unintentionally. These ideas that 'I must crack JEE to have a good future', 'if you don't get through JEE then you are a waste' etc, were hammered into my mind day in and day out. 

I didn't crack JEE but got into a well reputed private engineering college of India.. Fast forward 4 years, did my MBA from  tier 2 college only to join a service company at salary that would be considered too low for most of the folks here who compare salary like a plague. Recently joined a product company with good jump. Realised all that pressure I was put under in high school wasn't necessary. I am doing ok in life. 

 I think it's okay to be earning an average salary, everyone of us is on his own journey of growth and comparing ourselves on basis of packages seems myopic

It's okay to be normal and ordinary

I hope everyone one of you here once in your life have always thought about karma.

Ki if you are doing good deeds , being good to others will result in good karma and you will reap its benefits in future and vice-versa.

But is the above philosophy is valid in today's time in kaliyuga where the money and power rules.

People with connections are creating havoc over normal people.

Shouldn't we now think instead of making our karma good let's do what it takes us to be successful by hook or by crook?

Got married at  26.  If i get  a time machine, will do it by 24.    There is a quote by ashneer, where he says, 30's are the most important time is building one's career and setting the foundation to make money. Distractions from family life/kids will kill both the careers and family. I think he made perfect sense.  

I think the older one gets, its difficult to have compatibility.  Too many external stimulus corrupts our view of the society. And more over everything has a purpose and we all come with a shelf life.  If chances of starting a family  is slim or nil, whats the point in getting married? one is better of single.

TLDR:
I was reading up on the Navier Stokes equations today and it is so elegant that it might be my favourite math equation. 

Equation 1: ∇u = 0 (conservation of mass) states that the divergence of the velocity vector u is zero, meaning there is no net change in fluid mass.

Equation 2: ρ Du/Dt = -∇p + μ∇^2 u + ρF (conservation of momentum) expresses Newton's second law for fluid flow. It balances the acceleration of fluid particles (LHS) with internal forces (pressure and viscosity) and external forces (gravity or other external influences) on the RHS. 

This equation is foundational for modelling various fluid dynamics scenarios, from celestial bodies like stars and galaxies to F1 cars.

Long Version:
Here's how it works:

Equation 1:

∇u = 0 (conservation of mass)

So, u is velocity that can be represented as (u,v,w) vector, where u,v,w are x,y,z components of the vector.

∇u tells us that we need to do a partial derivative on u.

So,
∇u = ∂u/∂x + ∂v/∂y + ∂w/∂z = 0

or, the partial derivative of every component wrt corresponding direction is 0.


Equation 2:

ρ Du/Dt = -∇p + μ∇^2 u + ρ F (conservation of momentum)

LHS:
Since, u is velocity, then Du/Dt is acceleration and ρ is density. Newton's second law, F = m x a, applies here. Wherein, Du/Dt is acceleration of fluid particles and m is the density of the fluid.

RHS:
-∇p + μ∇^2 are the internal forces of particles hitting into each other while  F represents the external force.

F in most cases is gravity, so one can replace it with g. However, if you put in electromagnetism then, you can combine Navier-Stokes with Maxwell's equations. 

This has over time led to the development of magnetohydrodynamics, ie how stars and galaxies form. You can model the growth of our sun with this.

∇p is our pressure gradient and represents the change in pressure. Essentially, fluids move from high pressure to low pressure.

μ∇^2 represents viscous forces yielding from viscosity.

Imagine this can model aerodynamics of F1 cars.

I joined AmEx Gurgaon in 2015 in PoS Fraud Strategy as a Business Analyst. I was having a rough time at AmEx as I really wanted to pursue my passion of Mathematics in the US. I had secured an admit at Univeristy of Illinois - Urbana Champaign and UT-Austin in their MS programme and was totally checked out at work.

During my tenure at AmEx, I was mostly bored. Looking at internal tools and spreadsheets was the worst. This coupled with the fact that I was travelling to and fro between Noida and Gurgaon meant that I was commuting a solid 4 hours everyday.

In this time of mental agony, I met this charismatic young woman, she was an Analyst in the Credit Underwriting Team. I don't know what got into me and I asked her out to coffee. We went to the Starbucks in CyberHub the next morning and she was the most delightful personality ever. Sweet and elegant, she talked of her passion with vigour, from her ideals to writing poems. I left that conversation feeling uneasy though. 

She reminded me of what I wanted but also of what I was scared to lose in her. 

We continued to date for the next 6 months in a hush-hush manner to avoid any suspicion at AmEx. I had to start the process of getting my F1-visa for the US and when I told her about it she was extremely disheartened.

In my heart, I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my days with her and life without her was nothing but an empty void. She came with me to the US Consulate Office, and I don't know what got into me but I kissed her.

I knew that I wanted her more than anything else. 

Decided not to give the Visa Interview and applied to ISB with my GRE score. Got into it and ended up becoming a Management Consultant in MBB. 

We got married in 2019 and welcomed our daughter into this world in 2021. 

I wonder what life would've been living in the US. But whatever it would be, it couldn't be better than being in her arms when we come back from work. 

Have faith. Everything will turn out to be okay. Trust the process

Imagine you have a very complex situation with varying degrees of randomness. How do you evaluate the probability of certain outcomes? 

One way is a deterministic way which is to sit down and try to compute probabilities of events.
Another way is to simulate these interactions with various seed values and see how these outcomes vary. This is called a Monte Carlo simulation, where we use random sampling to model and analyze complex systems that involve uncertainty.

Let's set up a game and apply a Monte Carlo simulation to it.

You(Hero) and Me(Villain) engage in a strategic coin flipping competition over a series of rounds. Before each round, both of us independently decide whether to flip a coin or pass the turn to the opponent. 

The outcomes are as follows:

1. If both players decide to flip, a fair coin is tossed, and the player who called it correctly gains a point.
2. If one player decides to flip and the other passes, the flipping player gains a point without the need for a coin toss.
3. If both players pass, no points are gained or lost.

We can simulate it by making each decision random:
1. Hero and Villain both independently choose between 0 and 1 for deciding whether to toss or pass. We use 0 as Pass and 1 as Toss.
2. If both pass then we let the scores as is.
3. If one passes and not the other, then we add +1 to whoever decided to toss.
4. If both decide to toss then, we do a random coin flip where 0 = Heads and 1 = Tails. Hero can randomly choose between Heads or Tails. The Villain takes the opposite position.

First is the Monte Carlo Simulation and the difference between potential outcomes for 1000 rounds and 20 simulations, which is the graph shared.

These jobs are among the most susceptible to automation, even without advanced Machine Learning. Perhaps, it's a matter of trust. People prefer human accountability over machines when it comes to decision-making, due to an intrinsic trust in humans over machines.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝟰𝟬%:

Around 40% of jobs fall into a middle ground: they involve interaction, file management, and value creation but remain somewhat detached from core decision-making. These roles are often found in Big4, WITCH, large MNCs, and marketing/advertising sectors, representing a standard job that offers a decent income and work-life balance, though the level of fulfilment can be debated. 

Typically, those in this category have moderate personal ambitions or high ambition with a low risk appetite. 

𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟯𝟬%:

This is inclusive of folks who are either:
        A. Work on the cutting edge in their respective fields.
        B. Run enterprises.
        C. Work in well run companies and took exceptional risk

Almost exclusively they work/studied in STEM related fields and coupled it with smart risk taking. It also consists of folks who thrive in ambiguity and have the intellectual horsepower to drive outcomes in uncertain environments.

I posit that our positioning within this tier-list determines our outlook towards life and work.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮

I will complete 3 years as a professional soon. Quit a Big4 to join a startup for better pay and faster growth but despite putting in my best work and leading initiatives, going above and beyond all the time, my peers are all earning better than me doing similar jobs.

i never had a financially aware upbringing. my father put us through hell due to his bad decision making and despite me being very financially savvy, am unable to save any money because im so anxious I tend to spend what I dont have. i had to take up a lot of freelancing to aid my lifestyle but now im busy all the time and have no time to myself. 

idk what to do. idk how much savings my parents have since I live away from them and dad never discusses his larger financial plans with me. he also does not have a stable job even at his age even though I know he is v hardworking and does his best. i feel i will never have enough money to support my parents and myself and feel like im running out of time. also doing interviews to leave this shitty company as well which is lowballing tf out of me. im not sitting idle at all, trying to startup on the side as well. i workout, eat and sleep healthy, have a great social life. the only problem is money which im constantly worrying about. i feel its a generational curse passed down to me. I know I have 10x earning capabilities but its all so vague and uncertain. I have an amazing support system and I know I can talk to my friends about this too. just thought of coming here first

Joined Fintech(Paytm) last year with 3.5 YOE - 31LPA(Base)
[Current] LaidOff but Got an offer in a SaaS company during my NP - 31LPA(Base)

YOE - 4.5 Years

Most of the companies I interviewed for were not able to match my current fixed because of which I took this offer. Now I feel like my Base is low as compared to the market average in terms of YOE which makes me worry about my career’s progression. Do you also feel the same? 

But at the same time I am grateful that in this job market, I have got a job. What do you think? Am I rationally thinking here? I live with my parents and they are partially dependent on me. I hope I have made a correct decision.

Feeling low becoz of my base CTC

When i was in college i wanted to build my own company/product. Thought of many ideas and tried to build something. None of them worked and it affected my studies so I had to quit just to clear my exams.

After college I took placements in a WITCH like company where I got put into data entry/operations job after clearing difficult coding interviews (kismat kharab?). 
Somehow learnt new technologies on the side and managed to switch to a development role at a lower salary in a startup.

After 3 years Worked hard on DSA and (barely) managed to get a good offer with above average pay. But the company is not stable anymore and may layoff at any time. 
Right now struggling to learn enough DSA to crack any company.
Now I am almost 30, i have no hobbies,no talents, no relationships just trying to have a stable career.

I see people everywhere doing so many things at once. How do they manage to do this.
They are working at FAANG and managing businesses at the same time, have a bunch of friends.
What am I doing wrong?
