 Also now only hot shot doctors are earning crazy amounts otherwise it is normal figure

Peak is higher for doctors but comes very late so kids of doctors are very lucky but for software engineers peak is early and they can enjoy their money

But initially also doctors earn 80k-1lakh that's what software people earn, in-hand salary

Doctors ka initial 30 around start hoga and software engineer career starts at 22-23

Even for the same income, doctors pay lower tax. So, their in hand income is higher.

Product Manager

Surgeons are the ones who earns most and that too after building a good reputation. Most doctors working on payroll of a hospital brand earns not as much as we general crowd think.

Software Test - QA

Saw this on Twitter today. Tech Mahindra hiring graduates for 3.25 LPA and 24*7 Shift timing. I talked to various people to get an idea of their pay. 
A) A plumber lives near my house. He said he earns 2-3k daily and works for 20-25 days average. He earns 50-60k per month. 
B) Electrician earns in the same range. 

And other technicians and workers like this who are skilled earn a lot more than a software engineer. 
This is the hard reality. Students study for 16 years and pay 15-20 lacs college fees for this.

Plumbers, Electricians earn more than an average engineer.

 At the same time, you should know electricians/plumbers add more value to the society than a “fresher” TechM shift employee. If you’ve paid college fee that should not entitle you for a high-paying job. It’s just a privilege.  
  
 Sooner you realise this, better it would be.

Why do educated graduates are paid the same as a sweeper of railway ? Why do service based company do this , do they think freshers are as worthy as a sweeper ? This is a genuine question, most of the service based companies earn in billions why they choose to pay shit to a hard working student who just got a job ? This is so unfair. I feel they are just taking advantage of them.

Yeah there are layoffs happening. But there are pockets where software engineering hiring is also in fact increasing.

I love to read about tech and how startups evolved. Have spent a lot of time figuring out how the good product companies in the US got built: Google, FB, Instagram, Snap, Pinterest etc. etc. 

One thing stands out: A lot of these started out as just projects, and not a real startup. 
Instagram was just an idea to make photo filtering better. Reddit was just a project around making a cooler internet.

They set off as projects, and got some traction before becoming funded startups. Because they had devs in the founding team, who were always doing projects as side hustles. 

This wasn't the time when SDE salaries were so pumped up, they didn't want to just become good devs, they probably wanted to solve real problems. 

My takeaway: 

Maybe Engineers shouldn’t be too incentivised to just code. They should be incentivised to think business. 
Thats how FB, Google, Insta etc happened as companies.

In India, high pay endears engineers to stick to coding, do less business thinking.
That’s why we don’t see too many coders posting their side projects on X, Reddit, GV within India. Maybe there just aren’t enough. 

Have just been thinking about this. 

Open to thoughts from the community - maybe my view is limited. Would love to hear.

This is an actually very true. 
  
 I’ve seen developers who are very good in the stuff they do but lack the thinking from a customer / business POV. They take the PRD and convert it into code but never ever question whether this is the experience they want to provide to the end user.  
  
 Everyone needs to understand code is a way to achieve business and to achieve business , you would need to think from a business prospective. 
  
 That’s why , I always tell my juniors whenever they code , always take a step back and put yourself in the customer shoes and think what you are doing is what you want as a customer or not

I work at a startup. And It’s super funny but I think my boss is moonlighting. Here are the facts: 

- he’s hardly focused 
- he’s hardly trying to expand her role at work 
- he’s regularly on external calls taken secretly 
- he doesn’t care to understand what’s going on in other parts of our company

Why is moonlighting unethical? Let’s keep legality aside for a minute although it is not illegal. 
 Your senior leaders are directors at multiple companies. 
 CEO of startups like Lenskart, shadi etc are sitting on TV for personal investments which they will make money of and spending hours in shooting. Those same CEOs layoff as per their whims and fancies. 
 But when a lowly employee with a meagre salary tries to increase his/her earning potential, this crab mentality kicks in and it becomes unethical. 
  
 A person can be too good to handle both(or more) jobs superbly. However, if there are performance issues, you deal with that as an employer. It’s not like people working on a single job don’t underperform. 
  
 Also, there are 24 hours in a day and I am “supposed “ to work for 8 hours. Mathematically, a person can work 3 jobs in a day (and try to sleep at work). 
  
 We all rooted for Will Smith in the “Pursuit of Happiness “.

I have been getting a feeling that software engineers (SEs) have a sense of entitlement, believing they deserve a salary of 50-60 LPA with 2-3 years of experience and a 30-40% raise every year. As an SE myself, I believe this sense of entitlement leads to unrealistic expectations in the workplace and hampers actual output. Past nine months have been brutal, with mass layoffs and minimal or no increments. Due to this I have noticed people putting minimal effort into their work. I understand that getting no appraisal can be demotivating(trust me I do) but considering what we are paid for what we do is just insane(I am comparing with other industries).
With funding becoming scarce, many companies are no longer burning through cash. Most Indian companies will prioritize profitability to secure further funding rounds or pursue an IPO. Since engineering teams account for a significant portion of expenditures, everyone will be looking to cut costs by any means necessary.
What are your thoughts on this situation? Do you still give your 100% even if you didn't receive a raise but are being well compensated?"

Data engineer

Young SWE start with double digit salaries, while someone in Non tech will need 5-10 years to reach that level
Even the business roles, the direct revenue generating roles don't pay good traditionally

Funny how techies think everyone gets paid similar
A lot of it changed with startups trying to acquire talent, but not sustainable
Because the market simply doesn’t pay

How do non tech compete with this skewed demand-supply chain?

Tech and Non tech Pay Partiality is something no one talks about

Engineers deserve their pay.  
  
 1 - The code that engineers write are assets of a company. The code might keep running and serving customers for years after a engineer has probably even left the company.  
 On the other hand, the work that most non-tech folks do are not assets, but an operational expense.  
  
 Companies don't derive benefit of a non-tech even beyond the same month the work is performed.  
  
 The difference is the same as painting your house vs brushing your teeth. You don't paint your house everyday but you do brush your teeth. Painting here is a long lasting asset, adds to the value of the house. Brushing is necessary work but with ultimately perishable benefits.  
  
 2 - Code that engineers write provide non-linear benefits. A team of 30 in Zerodha were able to serve 3-5x more customers in the pandemic. This same scalability does not apply to non-tech majdoori. Business has scaled? Hire more heads. Not with code. 
  
  
 Obviously above does not apply to senior managerial folks who build and architect the organisation, set the cultures, create processes. The impact of their work is long lasting and non-linear. But work of junior business non-tech folks - well, they're getting paid as much as the value they create. Low leverage, low pay. Coding is very high leverage. 
  
 Before you jump on me, I worked for sales in years. Then shifted to product. Above two points are a reality whether you like it or not.

Data Engineer Salary range in India 10 Years experience?

So last week, I got coffee from Starbucks early morning and was sipping it while travelling to the client office.

As soon as I got to the reception, I was asked to go into a conference room where the CEO and the tech lead was there with the entire tech team. CEO straight up says, "We have a problem, a BIG one". Someone from our team had introduced a bug into the codebase for an internal API that had no fallbacks, their main service was down because of us. They had pushed a hot-fix which reverted to an older version based on a heuristic but it lacked a lot of the ML intelligence we had built for them. 

My PPT suddenly seemed worthless. I was almost on the verge of breakdown because I was pulling very long hours. Bhai! I didn't meet my girlfriend on one of the dates and she was super mad at me.

I coordinated with our developers, reviewed code personally after 6 years of no coding, and called colleagues at Deloitte for support. We re-deployed project on K8s and? It worked obv. CEO shakes my hand and I head back home.

Leaving the office, I felt that what am I even doing with my life. I feel that I should get back to coding now. So, I have decided to devote weekends to brush up my tech skills. Girlfriend is supportive toh dekhte hain kya hota hai.
