Firing after PIP. What to do?

Hi folks, A friend of mine has been put in PIP. He's afraid he'll be fired at the end of it. He's not a bad performer. Just stuck with a toxic boss who can't lead but expects 100 things to be done simultaneously and that my friend is a mind-reader. What do you do if you're fired by the firm? What do you say in the interviews? It's just been 7 months in the role. How do you justify the subsequent gap that may follow. Appreciate if someone share any tips. TIA!
