Was looking for automation solutions for my startup, came across an early stage AI startup that had 3-4 meetings with us and showed us screenshots of their product, but delayed product demo and signup.

Few days later said they're shutting down because they couldn't raise funds and had no MVP ready to use. But they didn't tell us that earlier, all they said was "we are in early stages, still working on product, need info from you"etc.

While their vision seemed good enough, not having an MVP while pitching for clients is weird and a waste of time tbh. No one will know or learn anything unless they try using an actual product, including themselves. And it isn't hard to build one either, i think I have the gist of it and might already be in production by other startups in this space. Decent low hanging fruit in SaaS with good long term potential.

Doing things that don't scale doesn't mean you don't put in the required amount of work before approaching clients. Don't want to name them, they probably learned as much by now.

What's the most valuable lesson you've learned from a failed product launch?

I started designing around 2019, self start though i never thought this is going to be a real field designing screens but i landed here and eventually liked it. 

I started as UI/UX designer in a service based company with a mere package of 2lakh. And then after I left that company had a package of 3.5lakh.

I joined a new company 2.5 years back in a product based company 5lakh and after i got appraisal salary hit 9lakh a year.

Even though i have this much experience i am still struggling in designing a good screen as compared to Software development where you can join a good company and you can get a salary above 15 lakh for sure. Product design is hard and to be in the industry you really have to wake up and start learning whatever you have to come up with whether learning Android, web, ios , design patterns, design system or so. If your company does it or not .

After applying and rejected to different companies i am now concluding that your experience doesn't matter in this field ofcourse experience in domains works.

Trust me if you get less money, your opportunities are less. It's you who will have a good opportunity if you have good knowledge and skills.

On the personal side, i am rejected by girls who don't even do jobs ,  earning less salary, and don't even think about high salary girls.

I just wanted to flush out and want to start with a fresh mind, sorry for bringing this up. I will start again. I do again

Frustration and sadness

Hardly getting any calls for PM roles. Is the market really cold? Or AI rejections are taking over potential interview callbacks?? I see a 10/10 match with my profile for a JD but eventually get rejection mail even for screening/shortlisting, I suspect AI rejection is taking over. Appreciate Any thoughts and tips in such frustrating times.

Is PM job market cold?

NextLevel has entered maintenance mode. Friends working on it have kind of confirmed. 

Idk why they even started this product. There was zero need for it, but management just HAD to have their way. 

Everyone working on NextLevel has basically given up at this point. We're in maintenance mode, just waiting for the official announcement. The product roadmap was a joke from day one. Instead of focusing on something actually useful, they kept adding random bells and whistles. Oh, let's make it like Gas app with polling! Let's throw in some Inshorts-style news! 🙄

Here's a pro tip: copying features from 3 different products doesn't magically create one great product. It's like they threw spaghetti at the wall and hoped something would stick.

This is a lesson for anyone trying to build in the consumer space. You can pour all the resources you want into something, but if your thinking is fundamentally flawed, you're just burning the money.

Management needs to actually listen to people who know what they're talking about. But nah, they'd rather chase their pet projects and ego trips.

Things not great at Unacademy's NextLevel

In July 2002, Google did something crazy:

They hired a 22 year old computer science student and made him the product manager for Gmail.

Gmail engineers were shocked.

Gmail was the most important new project at Google. Its target was 10M users.

And this guy, who was just out of college, would be the PM?

But they were overruled, because Google had a bigger problem:

Product managers.

Google couldn’t find good PMs.

Co-founder Larry Page rejected all the super-experienced PMs from Microsoft, McKinsey, etc.

They talked about management and strategy and business. Larry Page hated this.

He wanted Google PMs to be technical.

Otherwise how would they work with the engineers?

That’s when a Google VP, Marissa Mayer, had an idea:

If we want PMs with technical skills and don’t care about their experience, why don’t we hire computer science students from college?

Thus, the Associate Product Manager (APM) program was born.

Brian Rakowski, a 22-year-old CS grad from Stanford, became the first APM. He was put on the Gmail team.

Brian was scared.

How could he work with super experienced, super senior engineers on a super important project if they didn’t respect him?

Marissa gave him the answer: Data

She explained to Brian that a PM didn’t give orders to engineers. His job was to be helpful to engineers.

If he had an idea, first he should do a small test on 1% of users. If it worked, he should show the test data to the engineers to work on it.

Thus, data became the centre of decisions, not seniority or politics.

The rest is history.

Gmail was a huge success.

APM program was a huge success.

The first APM, Brian, was a huge success. He’s currently the Vice President of Product Management at Google!

I've seen countless startups pivot, pivot again, and eventually fade into obscurity. It's not about the idea; it's about the ability to build a sustainable business around it.

So, next time you're brainstorming that "next big thing," remember this: it's not about identifying an unserved need; it's about creating a product or service that people are willing to pay for. And that, my friends, is the real challenge.

For me it was McKinsey 
 It was the best job out of college, status wise. 
  
 Did well in college and made it to the final shortlist. Was obsessed with it, read books and all about The Firm. 
  
 Then the interviews happened, couldn’t convert. Was a downer.  
  
 But 5 years later, doesn’t matter much. I feel life taught me better things. And my fascination of consulting jobs has changed drastically since :p

I understand, people from any background can enter product, but in the long term does being from a tech background play an important role in determining your growth?

I understand people would say 'nah' that's not the case, however the stats point towards something different.
(The analysis could be a bit skewed as well since earlier product was purely seen from a tech perspective)

Is tech the only way?

Hi , this post is intended to be a disclaimer to anyone who is planning to join Yubi. A lot of things are happening here that show some signs of an impending layoff

1) Several senior folks in tech and product have quit. Also there is no replacement hiring planned for them. Several projects are also getting shelved as a result.

2) there were several open roles a few weeks back and almost all of them are on hold as of now across all depts( tech , business , ops)

3) rampant cost cutting. The lunch options have been reduced to just 1 dal , 1 veg , rice and chapati.  Snacks have been removed too.


Because of several folks quitting in less than 6 months and no replacement hiring , load has increased tremendously on existing members who are themselves trying to leave. 

People have serious doubts on whether any hike or bonus will be given or not this year.

In early startups specially in b2b, product designers are not designers they're rather design support. Always restricted to reach till minimum viable ux.

Though whatever gets shipped at the end is better from past but power of shaping product is largely placed at PM's table and engeneering table (feasibility). 
Now you can avoid complaing and show high agency, partner with PM in defining Product but the default power house is still PM, not the designer. Also you don't have time for this because designs need to shipped to add to next sprint.

At the end you just take a deep breath and sigh because you made something better, bit better if not far from what existed before.

I guess high impact/ product definition work gets done by designer in big orgs only not only early age startups.

Good design is seamless and intuitive, making tasks feel effortless. Poor design, however, stands out because it disrupts the user experience, causing frustration and drawing attention to its flaws.

In my first job, I spent weeks perfecting a report template, streamlining data presentation and enhancing readability. It was used without comment. Later, I hurriedly created a less refined version for a different project. My manager berated me for the confusing layout, yet never acknowledged the efficiency of the initial template.

As there are very few product based companies in Ahmedabad I am planning to relocate to another city to switch to a product based company ofcourse for better compensation. I have applied to many product based companies but I'm not even getting shortlisted for the interviews. There are many other folks in the service based companies who have faced the same thing. Any advice for switching to a product based company would be really helpful.

I’m interviewing at a bunch of companies and most of them want a generalist in the product designer position. Expecting to take on every responsibility possible, leaving no room for any sort of work-life balance. 

Founders/co-founders, listen up. You might be obsessed with the problem you’re solving. Do not expect others to be equally obsessed. With all due respect, we’re here to look after ourselves and our families. You disguise these additional responsibilities as “learning opportunities” which is absolutely bollocks. You don’t even offer to pay accordingly.

A lot of it changed with startups trying to acquire talent, but not sustainable
Because the market simply doesn’t pay

How do non tech compete with this skewed demand-supply chain?

Tech and Non tech Pay Partiality is something no one talks about

Engineers deserve their pay.  
  
 1 - The code that engineers write are assets of a company. The code might keep running and serving customers for years after a engineer has probably even left the company.  
 On the other hand, the work that most non-tech folks do are not assets, but an operational expense.  
  
 Companies don't derive benefit of a non-tech even beyond the same month the work is performed.  
  
 The difference is the same as painting your house vs brushing your teeth. You don't paint your house everyday but you do brush your teeth. Painting here is a long lasting asset, adds to the value of the house. Brushing is necessary work but with ultimately perishable benefits.  
  
 2 - Code that engineers write provide non-linear benefits. A team of 30 in Zerodha were able to serve 3-5x more customers in the pandemic. This same scalability does not apply to non-tech majdoori. Business has scaled? Hire more heads. Not with code. 
  
  
 Obviously above does not apply to senior managerial folks who build and architect the organisation, set the cultures, create processes. The impact of their work is long lasting and non-linear. But work of junior business non-tech folks - well, they're getting paid as much as the value they create. Low leverage, low pay. Coding is very high leverage. 
  
 Before you jump on me, I worked for sales in years. Then shifted to product. Above two points are a reality whether you like it or not.

1. Google Trends Newsletter - Giving weekly or monthly newsletter on trending topics according to the categories by scrapping data from google trends because there is no API available. I've seen some micro saas around this earning.
2. LLM aggregator - Aggregator means I am creating a single API for the most of the LLMs avaialble in the market and you have to just change the parameter instead of handling all by yourself. We will take care of versions and everything hassles.
3. Synthetic Data generator with the format provided through AI

Other ideas I am thinking around - Notion Plugin, Github Plugins, Slack Integrations
