For Software engineers with 7/8 years of experience or access to relevant data points, can someone tell me the following:

Pay structure and salary increment in 2016-2019 cycle vs 2019-2023 cycle 

I have a feeling that a lot of SEs here have an inherent sense of entitlement, that they deserve a salary X / WFH / other covid perks... which is primarily pegged to the madness of 2020-22, where they were getting abnormal salary increments. My hypothesis is that they are still better off in 2019-23 cycle vs 2016-19 cycle.

I want to understand how much the salary Software Engineer can go up to?

Bit background about me:
- I have been coding since school time, (we had Java in the ICSE board), and have built multiple websites, apps, games, so had good experience before my first job.
- 2021 graduate and worked remotely for an early stage startup, started with 20 lpa, and got excellent experience and learning.
- This year, I switched to another remote company, with the role of SWE-2 and 42 lpa.

I have heard that salaries as Software Engineers start to plateau after a while. 
So by the time I have 10 YOE, and a Staff Software Engineer, maybe I can expect to reach ~1 Cr.

But at 20 YOE i.e double experience of 10 YOE, my salary would only grow about 50% like to ~1.5 Cr?

Am I understanding this correctly?

I have heard people say that one only gets better increment rates as once moves into management. I want to understand how much is that?

And at what age am I too old to be hired as a Software Engineer??

Need more insights to understand this better.

While the starting salaries and salaries at <10 yoe have really sky rocketed and this is good for the ecosystem, wanted to understand what happens to salaries in tech/product post 15 yoe+. 

I’m curious about this especially because it doesn’t tie up with income tax data. Assuming seniors leaders in tech and product would be making 1 cr+ easily and most of these would have formal streams of income that can’t be hidden easily, income tax department reports only around 1.3 lakh individuals (2 year old data though) who had taxable income above 1 cr. Even if the number has risen to 2 lakhs now, it still doesn’t tie back to the stories here of many people making above 1 cr.

Is the income tax data wrong or are the salaries plateauing at around 80-90L or have people found some amazing ways of saving tax. Just curious!

I have been getting a feeling that software engineers (SEs) have a sense of entitlement, believing they deserve a salary of 50-60 LPA with 2-3 years of experience and a 30-40% raise every year. As an SE myself, I believe this sense of entitlement leads to unrealistic expectations in the workplace and hampers actual output. Past nine months have been brutal, with mass layoffs and minimal or no increments. Due to this I have noticed people putting minimal effort into their work. I understand that getting no appraisal can be demotivating(trust me I do) but considering what we are paid for what we do is just insane(I am comparing with other industries).
With funding becoming scarce, many companies are no longer burning through cash. Most Indian companies will prioritize profitability to secure further funding rounds or pursue an IPO. Since engineering teams account for a significant portion of expenditures, everyone will be looking to cut costs by any means necessary.
What are your thoughts on this situation? Do you still give your 100% even if you didn't receive a raise but are being well compensated?"

I am currently applying to Enterprise / SaaS organisations in Bengaluru and getting confused when trying to benchmark my level against different companies as they all use different employee leveling scales.

This is getting to be an issue as the salary range is generally benchmarked to the level of the open position and I'm unable to reply confidently to the recruiters on my salary expectations.

My most recent position was as a Senior Lead UX Designer in an IT Services company.

I was leading teams of 3-5 UX and UI designers for end-to-end design engagements and my clients were large MNCs including a fortune 50 pharma giant. I was also involved in training and evaluating associate designers and expected to contribute to design proposals for potential clients.

Any advice or pointers on how you figured out your own experience and employee level when applying to roles would be really appreciated.

How the current SDE1 and SDE2 will get accomodated in IT industry in future. Hear me out. Currently lets say there is a team of 10 members in one of the IT company. Lets say 4 are sde1, 4 are sde2, 1 is sde3, 1 is teamLead. Now in future since higher positions are very less, how these 4 sde1 and 4 sde2 will get accomodated. In past years, for those who are currently at manager+ positions, when they were sde1/sde2, at that time number was low, so they got accomodated easily in growing IT demand. But now it seems there are already too many IT companies, seems very low probability that count of IT employees in total of India will even increase by 10-20% in next 5 years. Every year lakhs of IT engineers are also getting graduated. They can get that sde1 positions, but what about current sde1 and sde2 ? Do we need to find another career ?

Whoever comments, please explain in detail your thoughts. Need some discussions to decide future career path.
