I have 6 years experience. My current base/fixed is 60 LPA. (I also got a 5 lakh bonus and 5 lakh of my ESOPs vested this year making my total vested about 30 lakh. So the total comp is 70). 

I'm being offered a senior engineer position in an early stage startup (as part of the founding engineer team). They haven't given an offer yet.

Being early stage, the emphasis will most likely be on ESOPs. How do I evaluate this and set my expectations? (If I were to switch to a mature company, I believe the hikes usually are between 15-20%? How does this work for early stage startups?)

Hey everyone,  

I have been working in Gojek as backend developer for the past 3 years. The work life balance have been very good over these years. Recently due to layoffs there have been reorgs and i have been moved to a team whose work i didnt like much. Also the tech stack and problem statement this team has been solving has bubbled down in terms of complexity. 

I have an offer from a much smaller series A funded startup called kutumb. I have a feeling this place will give me enough opportunities to learn as well as there is around 20% hike. Would the experienced folks suggest the switch or should i just stay put?

I have been working in Razorpay for more than a year. This is my first job. I have been approached by an early age profitable start up. My life at Razorpay is pretty comfortable at least for most of the days. And I know job at this new company would definitely be more demanding than the current one. I would have to wear many hats as I would be the only developer there.
I make around 18LPA cash at RZP. How much should I at least ask for?

If we look at layoff trends in India, then late stage IPO headed startups are doing it to boost profitability, or mid to early stage ones where they're trying to fit into a viable biz model. some mid sized MNCs also did layoffs where they have seen hit to their books.. all in all, crux was similar - to boost efficiency and eliminate redundancy.
Then comes the companies with their support teams in india or US/EU banks and their ops outsourced in India.. i mean if you got friends in these firms you would understand how chillax they're about this.

Take the example of AmEx...there's so much slack in the company, got few friends there and all of them don't work more 4 hours a day and that too most of the work some excel and next to shit level of python/sql while their salary in almost 90-95% of avg market (similar to what top paying startups).. Along with that teams are operating at 150% of strength so wlb is heaven there. story is similar with folks in similar US based support ops in india (citi, jp morgan, mastercard, some service based orgs etc)

but look the irony of overall market.. you should be efficient and scared about your job as long you're into startups and Indian firms but once you make it captive or offshore centres of these US based firms.. you're life is chill, relax, no bad wlb, practically no layoffs. so you won't find these folks scrambling across GV or fishbowl or like that and getting stressed about seeing how other folks feel when one of the closer startups decided to restructure 

(i am frustrated because i once let go a offer of top US fintech company to go for a startup and now all i have is regrets given how the events across startup ecosystem are folding like layoffs across Fk, swiggy etc.. and not only layoffs but in general WLB and culture has taken a huge huge hit ::///// ) well it is what it is i guess then :,)

A few people who are in advanced stages of the process and/or have offers from slice have been asking me whether it's a good idea to join.

My answer has always been consistent and I'm posting this so that people have more clarity.

Good folks are leaving in droves which is why they are trying to fill in some roles fast.

The company doesn't have a proper CTO, with engineering being managed by two people, one the head of analytics and data science being the 'people mananger' who is highly under-qualified for the job, and the second a toxic and borderline abusive character who is the 'chief architect'.

On top of that, there are some AHs from Bizops who'll do everything to blame you if things go wrong and steal credit if things are good, making your day worse rest of the time.

The critical Glassdoor reviews are totally true, and present points in an elaborate manner, while the few positive ones are clearly planted with 1-2 lines written for each.
Plus the company is suppressing many reviews with the help of community guidelines.

Your package might have a generous ESOP component, but it is bloated and the company is looking to raise the next round at a highly diminished valuation.

There are more things in life than a few lakhs of extra base pay, for your long term well being.

I'm speaking about it openly since I left the org for a better opportunity recently and I don't want people to suffer more.

Your mental health isn't worth a slightly higher base pay in slice

Slice is a known red flag. Stay away at all costs.

Without disclosing numbers & names, I’m currently a PM at an AI unicorn 

Salary - 20LPA + 200 ESOPs (2L value, 50 will vest in March.) (Hike due April) 

Job Offer - 25LPA + ESOPs (8.5L value) (Gaming/eSports company, which is kinda my passion) 

I had initially asked for 30LPA but the company came back saying the max they’ll be able to do is 25LPA fixed. 

Looking for opinions on what I should do.

Hi, I have been offered a PM role at Paytm. My overall experience is 6 yrs with >2 yrs in Product. The CTC they are offering is 40 LPA  which is a 30% hike. In current company culture and wlb is good. If anyone can suggest, Is it lower/higher than market standards and how's the culture and wlb in Paytm Product team?

I've 3 yoe, currently working in a very small startup as full-stack dev. Company's revenue is declining from Q4 last year.

Every month layoffs are happening in each team. Last week, a dev was laid off from my team.

No hike till now, working here from last 1.5 years. Although, got performance bonus twice.

I want to work on a few ideas, tried to work on weekends but it led to burn out and started affecting my health, suffered from mental fatigue.

Please suggest.

Majority of Indian startups has toxic work culture and the same is not true for any US or Europe based startup. Indian startups just copy paste ideas from the west and apply it to Indian context. We don't have original product barring few such as Postman and all. Why is it so and how we can improve the situation?

I am a 6 yrs experienced Software developer and part of a mid-stage startup. This is my third job; I have been working here for 3 years. I was involved here as one of the core engineers at the start in developing the overall platform, After that, my growth as an engineer stagnated for 2 years . 

Constant importance and priority are given to business requirements and hacky work getting pushed to production in the name of fast iterations and business impact every week. 

My engineering manager lacks proper engineering skills and doesn't respect engineers even after their impact on the company and constantly keeps saying the engineering team doesn't contribute to the revenue of the company despite us pushing work that improves business positively. 

Last year around November, around 80% of the engineering team was subtly suggested to start looking out for work (basically a soft layoff) because management was too scared of a social media backlash

Due to all this,2 years' worth of technical debt has accumulated on the overall codebase and apart from giving justification for every code improvement that we try to make there, we still have to work on business/product requirements. 

My growth as an engineer has stopped and I am worried about missing out on the latest developments in the tech industry, especially with AI in the picture, and want to make my skillset somewhat AI-proof. I have come back to hands-on coding this year , so that's a positive start. I am considering taking a 3-4 month break after resigning from my company to study, develop side projects, develop a portfolio etc

Has anyone else been in this boat ? How did you come out strong?

I am working in a Pre Seed GenAI Startup (2020 Founded) as Head of Engineering (Team of 20 with 5-6 in Engineering, No CTO) 

It's been 3.5 years (3yrs Full Time + 6mon Internship) Previously it is in EdTech now in GenAI Space 

My CTC is 8 LPA + 0.45% ESOPs (10-12L in 25cr valuation). 
Skills: Nodejs, Nextjs, Monorepos, MongoDB, AWS, Serverless

1-2yrs ago we were thinking about scaling the tech team, etc but then that EdTech model started failing and then we went to a war time after that we pivoted currently also we are burning money revenue is there but very less (25% of the expense)

I was of the view that I want to lead teams and scale products That's why I was there in the team It can be the case tomorrow if we scale 

but Now I am confused whether I should switch my job and or stick with the startup maybe the startup grow tomorrow or a big VC fund us to scale (as I have ESOPs) or it will just be a waste of time or opportunity cost

Please guide 🙏 Anyone with a similar startup experience would really appreciate your help 🙏
