Yes I agree with you @FineReason This has been my experience as well at fairly senior levels. Also the interviewers seem to focussed on doing an exact match on solutions rather than look at fundamentals or first principles thinking. Its almost like the interview is trying hard  not to hire you and you have to break him.

Even if you soln is fine and completed you might rejected for Coding problems due to
- you solved too quickly 
- you solved but took time and used some debugging 
- You solved but you didn’t knew the other way interviewer have seen
- Fully observation based, code running is must 
- somehow your interviewer is smart then you you’ll be rejected for sure. ( here smart is subjective***)

I reflected back on my L4 Google interviews. Although I made minor mistakes and rectified by myself without additional hints from interviewer, they were looked upon as incapability. I wasn’t even considered for L3, though I solved all the questions with minimal hints with correct DS. Follow ups I was able to solve and discuss the right approach too.
Is this fair ?

Came across a scenario multiple times while searching for senior engineer jobs. I felt that in majority of the cases if the interviewer was from IIT, no matter how much experienced they are they always have a particular style of putting you down during coding or system design type of interviews where they have high acceptance to bookish answer rather than having an open mind to other solutions which can be discussed in details and probably has a far more chances of evaluating a candidate on core thinking and logical skills rather. What do you think? Have you also faced similar scenario?

Why do many IITians do dick measuring contest during interviews?

Sharing my interview experience for grapvine audience.
I applied to this company called Weave for Software Engineer role.

1. Recruiter call was very good
2. Coding round 45mins -
     a. Interviewer wasted 30mins Asking irrelevant questions for the coding round.
    b. Asked why my current company uses AWS instead of other cheaper cloud providers like GCP, Azure etc, as if I am CTO at my employer.
    c. Asked Hr questions like why I am looking for switch and what is my tenure at current company, it was totally irrelevant to coding round.
    d. Asked manipulative question to frame me, "What is the strength of my current engineering team?", I answered 5 engineers, SDE2, staffs etc. He then put his narcissistic comment "If I don't consider EM and PMs as a strength of the team" as in strength-weakness manner.
    e. Wasted 30mins in these BS questions and then gave a coding question which I solved with working code and he was satisfied with it.
    f. I was already shocked by his un-professional behaviour, to add to it he extended another 15mins to interview by asking follow up tech questions.
   g. I knew it's something wrong with this interviewer, then he started asking from which place in the country I am from.
I was not in a mood take anymore of his BS, so I gave vague answer mentioning my State in India, he yet started pressuring me to tell exact city.

Don't know how this interviewer was a senior engineer at that company with such foolish behaviour.

Even after coding a working solution and acknowledgement by interviewer.

I got rejection email saying "rejected due to my coding round".

I ain't taking such BS and un-professional behaviour, so I reported entire interview details to recruiter and Head HR of that company, it's totally unacceptable for interviewers to waste time of candidates with their incapability, bias and un-professional behaviour.

I got response that they will look into this matter internally and such behaviour is totally not acceptable

Weave Company- Unprofessional Interviewer

During a recent interview at a Pune-based startup, I encountered a problem statement that involved a rather uncommon custom data structure.

The problem, summarized on one page with about 150 words, took me around 10 minutes to fully comprehend.

I discussed my approach with the interviewer, proposing the use of a specific data structure tailored to the problem's requirements:

`Element = pair<pair<int,int>, vector<int>>;
`vector<Element> vp;

However, despite my clarity, the interviewer insisted on using a HashMap. With just 20 minutes left, he abruptly requested a switch to HashMap and solving the problem. This change, coupled with the lengthy problem statement, led me to overlook two important edge cases, ultimately costing me the opportunity.

“After checking his LinkedIn profile, I found that the interviewer was a 5-star coder on CodeChef. This suggests he was so confident in his approach that he was not ready to accept an alternative approach. His stubbornness and his ultimate preference for the HashMap cost me an opportunity.”

PS: I am myself a competitive programmer with a rank under 100 in CodeChef long challenges.

I have given 5 rounds of interview consisting of four technicals and hr round. 

My first three round was buttery smooth and i performed outstanding. 

In the last round i did made the solution as per the interviewer wants but i solved the question through other methods in the same time and space complexity. 


Verdict : got rejected. 

I know that interviewer know only one method and he wants me to do in that way.. how can i do that things ? 

Well the company was EDS  backed by northern trust was interviewing for junior full stack developer.

Hi Grapeviners, I have ten years of work ex in performance marketing and CRM. I started job search actively from Feb 15 this year and landed first interview today. 

How bad is the market out there. I usually get hired with in 30 job applications, also I apply to the role only if 70% and above role match with my previous experience also use referrals when available.

When should I give up Software Engineering

I am working as SDE 2 in Amazon, doing well for now, getting good work however i always have this feeling that one day i may end up losing job due to layoff or anything else and the thing is that in such a scenario i am not at all prepared for job change.
I never liked doing DSA or you can say i was never good at it. I did just enough to get an internship at Amazon and then got converted to full time and from there i never touched DSA again.

My question is how to get over this insecurity?

Recently, I gave an interview at this early startup in Bangalore. It consisted of 5 rounds.
- The first four rounds were technical, design, and assignment rounds which went well. I answered all the questions fairly well and the interviewer was happy knowing the answer.

- The fifth round was with the CEO - Now this was the turning point. He was more concerned about my personal situation. He asked questions like, where I live, where is my hometown, if WFO is okay for me (I was working remotely in my current company ), and where is your dad ( I said he was no more and that turned off the CEO of a company), how will you keep my mother in BLR, why your mom not living with your siblings?. And I was like "WTF man".the only technical question he asked -> "Have you ever hacked a system in your recent days?". 😂😂

After wasting more than 14 hours in the process I received a rejection mail without any feedback.

Message to recruiter - if you are more concerned about the personal situation of the candidate, please conduct a preliminary round for that.

Got rejected because of personal situations.

The lack of critical thinking these days is driving me nuts. I've got a few people on my team who've somehow BS'd their way into roles they can't handle. They can't do anything that takes more than a minute of actual thought.

It's like all I get is copy-pasted ChatGPT output for the simplest questions. Makes me seriously worried about how they will get better over time (as a lot of us did).
We're churning out folks who can't think for themselves, and it's scary as hell.

So basically I don't hesitate in challenging the interviewer if I feel like they don't know how to interview a senior candidate

so during many interviews, this is how I have caught them off guard:

1. The interviewer was asking me technical questions and expecting to explain properly throughout. So at the end i asked him about the tech stack they use, he said Azure. I asked him why they use Azure and not AWS, to which he said "it's cheaper", i didn't let it go, i asked him for a proper technical explanation, his red face was worth seeing.

2. The interview asked me a hard DSA question, and I wasn't able to solve it properly, he didn't even give me enough hints, just expected me to solve it. So halfway I asked him, would you like to solve a DSA if I ask you right now, he said no because it's not his interview. To which I asked, are you afraid that you won't be able to solve? If you are going to reject me for not solving this question, would you resign if you aren't able to solve the question. He ended the call.

3. One interviewer was asking me absurd technical detailed questions. I asked him why are you asking such questions, he said he needs to know my thought process because he will work with me. I started asking him similar questions, he said he won't answer because it's not his interview. I said I also need to know your thought process because we'll work together, so you should also answer these questions, he had no reply.

4. The interviewer asked me about a challenging project that I had done recently. I don't like this question at all. So I said there wasn't any challenging project because I'm good at what I do so it's always easy for me. He moved on to the next question.

5. HR asked me why I resigned without an offer? I asked if it's mandatory? No reply.

Not sure whether this is something to tom-tom about. Talks more about the quality of interviewer & the approach taken by the person.   
  
 To be honest, they're well within their right to ask you a tough question and/or to test your thought process, that's their job. If you get so easily offended, you're probably not going to fit in, in the long term.  
  
 I'm sure there are better ways to communicate that the interviewer is asking you a lame question or there's insufficient information.  
  
 Honestly, I take tons of interviews, an hour spent interviewing is an hour spent not doing actual work and drop in productivity. Doubt if senior people would ever do this to waste 'their' time... (Forget yours). Sensible people wouldn't.  
  
 No offense, but with so many interviews going this way, maybe time to point the mirror the other way...
