This may sound a bit basic - but how do I ask my manager to give me a promotion this year?
Same as title

Just be a bit philosophical and say something on the line
Hey manager, I have been in this role for XXX time and have learnt a lot. I want to move to the next level to expand my skills
Your manager should pick up what you're requesting and you should be good. If he doesn't understand, you don't need a promo, you need to change the company (at the higher position 😉)
Haha good advice. I’m a bit shy and usually very poor at asking for things for myself. But I will certainly try your script.
Maybe I do it via Email or chat? Or is that a bad option?

Don't worry man. I too am an introvert. But again, staying quite will lead to your potential slowing down. When I said it, my attitude was "Lets say this and see, he can't fire for this right ?"
If you have recurring 1 on 1 meetings with your manager, say during that, otherwise text him whatever is the common communication platform used for you work.

You should make a note of every task you have done , and seeing that you are a software developer that shouldn’t be hard to find. Although it’s wrong but managers don’t generally give you promotions unless you show that you are expecting one. So create that note and a pitch (GPT) and talk to him about the promotion if he denies or asks for justification pull up that note and make him remember the tasks you have delivered.
