I do not know why people are running towards startups, so let me tell what happened. i freelance in a stealth startup mode, like we are in the real estate tech space, and recently the founder raised 3 CR from the family and friends circle and told me that we might have few people in sooon, and i gave a status as we got funded, and guess what ? Literally all people are crying that i want to come in for development, and the worst thing is still we have not decided what to pay, and the feasibility of that idea takes time, and idk, will it stand and all! as even for a year

i have a question why this hype and all one of my friend was even ready to resign his job at oracle to join us and i told no wait for time as my salaries are delaying too

I have a question why people leave stable jobs for startups and here me wondering why my applications not get converted

I completed education from tier 1 colleges (MBA and Engineering both from coveted IIM and IIT). After MBA, I joined Wall Street bank and life was really good. Was enjoying the perks of a MNC although the work was also excruciating but was an overall good experience.

Left it for a startup (fast growth kida in me led this decision). Worked in the startup across multiple roles, learned a lot of new things. Tried staying away from office politics and earned a good name in the circle. But growth (read pay) was not that enticing and was not growing hence decided to leave. Was naive enough to quote this reason to business head and HR as well. Obviously it didn't go well with anyone.

Joined startup2, changed cities and joined it. The role was similar, although my manager was an epitome of a toxic manager. Was doing good but he always was able to find some or the other mistake in my work. If he would not find any mistake then he would suggest some tangential hypothesis and then reprimand me for not thinking about it. Was so toxic that I didn't take leave when my wife was hospitalized and giving birth to our child.
Tried doing everything possible but couldn't save the job and got laid off in the 1st lay off wave.

Was shattered. Confidence was at rock bottom. Tried searching for roles. Luckily I got into startup3 who had remote work at that time. Although I joined the marketing team (which was not at all related to my previous work) thus creating a mess of my profile.
Worked hard but in a "restructuring" exercise got laid off again.

Within a year 2 lay offs with random work and no concrete direction in work. 
Now searching for roles but not able to find anything suitable as I was in non-core roles and in this difficult time everyone is looking for cheap resources with 1-3 yoe and not looking for 7+ yoe with generalist profile.

Contemplating starting from zero in Marketing or learning coding/Data science so that can start my career again with right basics.

I have been through ups and downs in IT, but these layoffs seem crazy. There is just no pattern to it, more like everyone is firing let me fire.

Honestly I feel its high time Tech companies, Startups take a hard look at their business and revenue model. Most just seem to be in a herd mentality.  Every one is mass hiring, let me also mass hire. Every one is giving exorbitant salaries, let me also give.

Its become more a cycle now, hire in large numbers, find there is no work to give, no revenue to sustain, and so mass fire again. This just cant be going on. 

Who makes mistakes that results in revenue loss or crunch? 

Top management 

Who gets fired ? 

Every one except the ones who are responsible.

Dont fucking give me the reasoning that you are doing this for efficiency and streamlining.

No you are just doing it to protect your own arse, while making scapegoats of others.

So the Musks, Pichais, Zuckerbergs happily take fat bonuses, while drafting teary regret letters for firing. And they are supposed to be our role models to look up to? 

Enough is enough IT industry can't forever be running in this same mode. These hire and fire cycles are getting weary nowadays.

I was interning at Microsoft and got the PPO as well. But I chose to join a remote startup and resigned from Microsoft, for various reasons including Pay, Learning, Product, Tech stack, etc.

And everyone I talked with since then has asked the same thing, "bro why did you leave Microsoft?",  "bro Microsoft is such a big brand", blah blah.

When are we going to realize that working for a FAANG /MAANG /FAANGMULA /LODALASAN company is not the ultimate goal of everyone's life ?

Why are people so obsessed with FAANG tag ?

This question is to anyone who left a stable job and joined an early stage startup. How did you deal with the uncertainty, the high pace, and the changes in life style. 
I have accepted an offer from a startup and i feel very nervous. Mainly because Im afraid of what if it doesn’t turns out right. I do not want to start looking for jobs again.

Hi,
I am a 2023 passout btech graduate. Currently I am working as a full time SDE (Full Stack) in a well established startup (8 years old , Series A funded). It's been nearly half year here.

My compensation is 10.5 lakh base + 4.5 lakh performance bonus + free lunch and snacks + Insurance (Including parents) benefits 

I am pretty good at DSA (around 2000 rating on leetcode, 4 Star at codechef in 2nd year itself, 2000+ dsa problems)

I have worked in 2 startups as an SDE intern during college days and completed 5 internships overall out of which one was a US based startup. Also, I have many publications under my name over the internet.

I had many offers when I was graduating from college.

Most of the time people say, "Hey, you have done so much so Why are you not working in a big tech". Well I always wanted to work for big tech during college days but after I started working in startups my thought process changed  as here I got the ownership of the product.

Now it has been nearly 1 year since I started working in startups. Should I give it a try for big tech now?

Am I doing something wrong?

I am a 6 yrs experienced Software developer and part of a mid-stage startup. This is my third job; I have been working here for 3 years. I was involved here as one of the core engineers at the start in developing the overall platform, After that, my growth as an engineer stagnated for 2 years . 

Constant importance and priority are given to business requirements and hacky work getting pushed to production in the name of fast iterations and business impact every week. 

My engineering manager lacks proper engineering skills and doesn't respect engineers even after their impact on the company and constantly keeps saying the engineering team doesn't contribute to the revenue of the company despite us pushing work that improves business positively. 

Last year around November, around 80% of the engineering team was subtly suggested to start looking out for work (basically a soft layoff) because management was too scared of a social media backlash

Due to all this,2 years' worth of technical debt has accumulated on the overall codebase and apart from giving justification for every code improvement that we try to make there, we still have to work on business/product requirements. 

My growth as an engineer has stopped and I am worried about missing out on the latest developments in the tech industry, especially with AI in the picture, and want to make my skillset somewhat AI-proof. I have come back to hands-on coding this year , so that's a positive start. I am considering taking a 3-4 month break after resigning from my company to study, develop side projects, develop a portfolio etc

Has anyone else been in this boat ? How did you come out strong?

Hi folks, thinking of writing a regular mini blog here about my learnings being a generalist in the ecosystem.
I currently handle growth at an ecom startup and have previously been through 2-3 startups + a large corporate in my 7 year career.

#1: Why you should not stay only in startups

Recently started reflecting on salaries of many peers who are also startup folks and trying to see where it stands.
There are 3 cohorts:
a. People who started out in Big 4/Corporate & then became a generalist: They've been underpaid the most. First pay was 4-5L, and when they transitioned to startups, started at 7-9L. Over time, growing from there is difficult without MBA.

b. People who have forever been in startups: They earn more than A on average. But here too, there is a delta in their salaries vs. people with same YoE who went to an MBA and are in corporate now. Side note: I've seen this cohort has usually loved what they've done, and being in startups definitely has positively impacted their thought process.

c. People who went to a corporate/big tech etc. mid way: This cohort has done the best long term. Their pay got recalibrated when they went to a larger company in the middle through their career, and when they rejoined startups, they were respected more in salary negotiation.

This is to anybody out there who is a generalist and sees a similar path. Try to sandwich a proper, large company in your career. It gives you perspective on whether you like it and if startups is really your preferred route. And it also recalibrates your pay.

Startups will limit you basis your last salary. Corporates have standards basis bands. Just something to think over.

The Generalist - #1: Why you should not stay only in startups

Not only compensation, corporates help you to learn saying “NO” to not-related tasks. I see young startup folks in the name of “learning” are forced to do anything and everything. In my first startup role, I was handling the responsibilities of a PM + ops, which burnt me like anything without any significant skills gain. Corporate taught me delegation, saying “No” to things which aren’t part of your team.

A lot of folks working at startups seem to be "passionate " about their job. Some of them possibly, truly are. Some foolishly reverse engineer this passion because they're paid really well and they've been doing a good job and it's good personal PR to say "passion".  A few reality checks.

1. Your cool Bangalore lifestyle is a result of investment risks/bets taken by VC's .

2. Your salary is as much about the market demand as it is about your " passion " and talent.

3. Startups will generally lower the bar for hiring processes to meet their demand for talent. Why need so much talent? Because the startup  needs to spend that 100M$ Series C that just made them a unicorn. That's how they convince the VC to give more money. "We are going to 2x revenue by 2xing our salesforce and buying 10M$ worth of Saas that will increase our productivity by 5x. " And boom ...100M$ transferred into you SVB bank account.

4. You are as replaceable as a garbage bag on your dustbin. The HR is probably flirting with 10 other like you over linkedin.


5. The "values" this startup apparently espouses are mostly nothing but a honey trap and positioning to lure talent.

It's great to have a nice tech job that pays well and allows you to gloat on twitter like a techbro but don't let it fool you into getting an inflated sense of entitlement. You're probably living on borrowed time....and money. :)

" Passionate " Startup folks

I have a business idea, similar to takeaway food cafe stuff, planning to start from my own town (Tier2). Have done enough market research in the last few months and am sure enough to generate 1-2lakhs in profit with one store(will expand more to different cities asap).
But is it really worth it? I am a recent CSE graduate, and I fear that if I invest all my future time in this I might miss opportunities to start bigger scalable companies in the future as I would also miss the corporate ladder bus.

Should I start up?

1. Fancy talks from founders such as ownership, independence, building for next generation, speed etc
2. Learn new tech
3. Glofiying working at odd hours
4. Don't talk about stress and anxiety 

Start ups are not for weak heart and normal humans who have life after work. It's only for people who will give up their life to build somone else dream. Prove me wrong.

4yoe Engineer turned Product Manager. It's been 8 months I joined this B2B SaaS startup as an APM. Engineering team... mostly interns. Most of my time goes into execution following up with devs. Is the PR reviewed, is the bug fix deployed. No Jira, scrum, sprint planning whatsoever.

CEO runs the whole show. Only fear driven product management. I have no idea what it means to work on vision or strategy. My career has started off with a shitty foundation. Everyday I feel like quitting. What should I do? Quit right away or wait n switch to a better company?

I don’t think I can do even one week more of job search. 

Bangalore Startup’s have lost it - I am being offered 4-6L peanut salary because I am fresher and need a lot of training but the assignments I get for the process are full on product launch-GTM case studies. I mean WTF

It was better if I was looking for a sales role 4L salary and seedha normal sales interview.

I don’t think how they think that I can make their GTM in under 2 days and at the same time need a lot of training.
