Afraid about moving to Blr
I am a middle class guy working as a senior engineer in one of the product companies. I belong from the north-east, and I am the only child in my family.
Since covid, I was working in a wfh setup. Recently, my company has ended work from home for everyone, and I am supposed to move to Bangalore very soon or quit.
I am an active user on all social media groups on Reddit, Fb, etc. For the past couple of months after seeing so much of negative news about Bangalore, Especially the high population, skyrocketing rents, the auto unions, corruption, cut-throat competition, discriminative news, traffic issues, etc. It makes me nervous to be honest. My wfh here was pretty chill, and I had a very limited social circle here, but was satisfied since I could spend most time with my mom and dad.
Im very afraid now about what should I do next, shall I quit the job and search for wfh, or shall I make my move. I don’t have any acquaintances there, no friends, no idea about what I’ll be doing next, how to start house hunting, or job hunting. At this point I am miserable and overwhelmed to think about all of this.
Anyone who has gone through all of these, If you can share your 2cents, experiences or thoughts, about how you dealt this phase. It will be really helpful for me at this point in my journey. Thanks in advance! 🙏🏻

Observer bias

Can you give more context here?

Bangalore has received a lot of hatred in recent months because of the things you mentioned but IMO it is still the best place in India for a techie. People are nice in general, the weather is great, ample opportunities to switch, cosmopolitan culture and there are a lot of good restaurants and pubs.
You will find all sorts of people here who are interested in all sorts of things, so making friends shouldn't be a problem. Dating scene is pretty good as compared to other metro cities.

Sir, hath milaao. Which city are you from?

north east brother, I can’t reveal exactly here due to the much openness of this forum. Where are you from? Maybe we can get in touch soon.

Which state itna toh bata do. I'm from Assam btw. 💪💪

Bro online u’ll never read more positive than negative. Go there without all these assumptions and u might be surprised. But to prep for worst, keep trying to get wfh so u can exit sooner. Just stop worrying abt things that haven’t personally happened to u.

@randomadvert my company also recently announced wfo and more bad total wfo 5 days a week. I also have to move to bangalore. More bad thing is my parents are asking me for government job preperation and not allowing me to move. I can understand.

Sarkari naukri k alag faayde hain.

haha.. all parents do the same. I personally feel that they’re not wrong from their perspectives, since you are guaranteed pension every month after retirement. Plus the job takes care of your basic rent, lodging, etc. But on other hand, looking at the inflation rates and absurdity in prices of flats, transportation, food, I don’t think govt will soon be adjusting the compensation of it’s posts. There is also a trend of govt shifting its control over public bodies and services, and bringing in privatisation wherever possible.
Maybe you can convince them of the reasons and promise them to bring them along with you after sometime you settle in. They won’t want you to buy them absurd things, they just want to be taken a bit care of when they turn old. The concept of staying together as a family, and keeping the bond alive is what they’ll desire.

NCR aajao. Baat khatam.
Okay, my 1 cent:
Your fear % {BLR >> NCR}
Job Search, House Hunting - Apps are available, ask for help, you'll get it as you are active on the platforms you mentioned.
Don't just quit, but visit BLR with help of your colleagues unless you have a job in NCR.
NCR me job milgya, toh shift krle BLR se

Thanks for your input. I had a job in NCR prior to covid and had to shift to my hometown. I enjoyed working and travelling there, connectivity was the best part.
But recently, I’m not finding much job openings there. The ones available aren’t willing to pay as much as blr. I maybe wrong though.

Salary - as per market standards - nah, they are as per the cost of living of that city, dark secret.
It's upto you as I'm able to get your thinking

Online forums claim north east to be all mountains and forests. But you know Assam is in a river basin, right? Delhi is declared the rape capital, but tons of girls including my cousins move to NCR for their studies and careers and have a thriving life there. And they love the city.
There is stabbing, mugging, shooting in san Francisco, London, Germany, still it's an aspiration of most people to go there.
I've lived in both Bangalore and Delhi. BLR is of course expensive, but if you can afford 20k rent per month, you'll get a great place in 30 mins of your office. If you have to go to office few days a week, you can stay 6-7 kms far. I do.
Bangalore has a great crowd, very humble and helping people. Most in Bangalore East are techies, corporate folks - they are very calm and down to earth.
So are locals.
There are a couple of locals and auto drivers who are pissed because of the gentrification IT has done to the city. But hey, that happens in every city right?
Marathis hate Biharis, Americans hate Indians, blah blah
Chill.
Come, live for a few weeks in a PG, go out and plan to keep yourself occupied. If things are good for you, then plan the path ahead.
But please don't make a strong judgement without experiencing it first hand.

Finally a sensible comment instead of the blind hate.

I've been in Bangalore for more than 2 years yet never faced any issues as mentioned on reddit/Twitter except flooding, bad roads and powercuts. Goonda autos and bad police exist but never faced them myself as there are many good autowalas through apps and not those stand based autos and I don't even have a vehicle. Can't comment on outsider racism because I'm from the same state however not a local of Bangalore. There are a lot of people so the sample you are seeing online is way less compared to actual population. But this goes for any big metro city man. You'll have problems in every one of them, no city is perfect. Tier 2 cities are better in my opinion but Bangalore is not that bad as people talk about it on social media

I agree on your perspective. I guess speaking Kannada might’ve helped you smoothly deal with people.

Not completely required. Many shops are by tamil and Telugu migrants who have been living here for long so they don't care which language you speak. Helps with the cabs autos and buses if you take them. In restaurant many attenders are from North East, swiggy guys are from Bengal/Odisha. And guards/ security/ sales reps I've observed are from North India. My kannada accent is different so locals will know I'm an outsider too but even if you are a local cops and autowalas will not spare u

The hatred and venting on online forums is so bloated and overrated. Bangalore is still a city with fantastic weather, lots of things to do, reasonably safe, loads of opportunities, a youthful crowd and a reasonably tolerant society. Make sure you get a house in a decent area rather than crappy new areas.

Its not that bad bro, considering you are a senior engineer you should be able to afford. Just a small advice buy yourself a 2 wheeler and you would be good to go. I was at your feet some time ago but when I visited and lived in Bengaluru I found it great.
