McKinsey consultant commits suicide due to work pressure :(
This is truly truly heartbreaking to hear.

The fact that Mck tried to cover up its name in investigation is sad
They paid in 8 digits for this.
Just see the logo and tagline of leftist Indian Express
Corporate can never be trusted. I read somewhere on twitter that “You are just a resource for your company”. Companies literally don’t give damn about employee mental health. So sad to hear this.

And it was due to work pressure. I hope McKinsey reconsiders their practices if they can get somebody to this point.
Fuck this.
Wtf. I knew work pressure was bad but this is extremely sad. Om Shanti.
Probably family circumstances or loans, losses in stock market,...
OM Shanti 🙏
Hmm yea this cab really f up your mental space, toxic work and financial liabilities.

It's shocking, the discourse here. People are calling him "weak af", "instead of blaming mckinsey, we should blame the choices people make", "Why didn't he quit? Absolutely foolish to end life due to work reasons". Let me first get my biases out. I detest management consulting as a profession (not management consultants) and I hate people people who think they are superior because of their IIT/IIM tags. Also I didn't know Saurabh (although I had heard of his name from some friends who worked at McK / IIMC). Good that this is out of the way.
Here was a guy, 24-26y old, who went to the best of the institutes in both BTech and MBA and then got one of the most "prestigious" placement offers on campus. There are people saying, oh I am from IIMC, oh I am from MBB... There's a difference. This person has consistently shown academic brilliance throughout his life. He cracked two of the most competitive and stressful entrance exams and even after that he got one of the top jobs from his campus. He had a calibre that 90% of the people on this platform can only dream about, but not achieve (I am sorry to put this in such a raw form, but it's true and when people anonymous post rubbish about a sad tragedy, they need to be put in their place). He obviously was ambitious. He was the Batch Representative of his college at IIMC (There's only one every year and it's considered a reputable position of responsibility). He was simultaneously preparing for finance roles (He had a CFA L1, NCFM Equities certificate). I am not writing his obituary. I a just telling you that this person, while competing in one of the most competitive places at IIMC, was simultaneously juggling academics, finance prep and his responsibility as Batch Rep. So, people who call him "weak" or that he couldn't handle stress, obviously don't know how many stressful situations this person successfully overcame throughout his life. So if we have to blame someone, I can only see his employer or client. (Cont.)

I am not saying that he wasn't depressed. He could be and that might as well have tipped the scales in favour of taking this decision. But McKinsey can't get away from this unscathed. It's a toxic place and needs to be held accountable. It's abhorrent how they are trying to push this under a rug. This happened three weeks ago, and McKinsey was able to keep it under wraps for so long. People at McK were being told it was an accident. They even covered tee suicide part internally. Hoping at least one decent investigative journalist can take this up and get to the bottom of this sad tragedy.
question is what exactly had he faced there which led him to suicide does anyone know that ??

Sadly none of the companies these days focussing on mental health and WLB. Continuous pressure of layoffs forcing employees to sacrifice their health and peace. Doesn’t look like it is going to stop any-day.
I admire Management Consultants! This is truly saddening. How do others manage that kind of pressure ?

lolz its that admiration which led him to suicide
My admiration doesn’t me that I consider them as robots. They’re humans after all. I am pretty sure if I ask a Management Consultant that same question, they will tell me to manage the stress, instead of joking about it.

It’s crazy how so many of us venerate McKinsey, but the sad ground reality that comes with a fat pay check is extreme pressure, long working hours and erratic travel schedules that screw up your health to an irreversible extent. Very sad.

McKinsey is a choice and not a compulsion. So instead of blaming McKinsey we should blame the choices people make. I am also from the same college and we do know of the options and the costs attached to it. There are several roles with decent WLB.
While Mck can provide a better work culture, it is us who push it further by prioritising the brand above all.
I don't think the company should really be absolved of guilt because the individual "made a choice". Everyone has different aspirations and everyone is really just hustling to be able to make it there
One can sign up for a job with low WLB - but there must definitely be something extreme at play for it to really escalate to this level, no? Nobody really ever chooses that.

I agree. Hence I said blaming Mck for this doesn't make sense.
There can be other factors we aren't aware of.
Irony is today folks say it's sad ...then from tomorrow apply in bulk in same company
Bro was a junior associate. Should have just quit. No job is worth your life.
Another one bites the dust. May he rest in peace and his soul find a better home...
This is absolutely horrifying

This is really sad. And the fact that there has been no acknowledgement or even action on this?
Read on reddit that Mck just hushed it up internally as well - how can there be no consequences?
I've worked previously at an MBB and I know it can get intense but I guess I was fortunate to be in a system where I knew I would be protected in case I was going through something so extreme.
So this is absolutely shocking to me that Mck would in anyway want to continue fostering such managers and teams within the company.

In India also this corporate sector is very evil. In many companies employees are treated as slaves. Anyway suicide is not the answer
Suicide karne walo ko weak bolna band karo. It is the most childish argument ever. "Living is the hard way to solve your problems"
If you already believe suicide is the easy option, and you're NOT taking it, then you're irrational.
Agar office jaane ka ek rasta pahad se hokar jaata hai, and doosre pe highway hai, which one will you take? Highway se jaane Wale ko gaali doge - "saala easy option leta hai"
Don't be dumb. People don't commit suicide due to tantrums. They commit suicide due to EXTREMELY DEEP beliefs of being "less than" or hating the world they are in where even success seems to NOT be worth fighting for.
Why didn't he quit? Absolutely foolish to end life due to work reasons. Jaan h toh jahaan h !!
And yes work can be toxic but don't let it get on your nerves !
