My company has an unlimited leave policy. Also the company recently laid off my coworker for taking too many leaves. What's going on here ?

The “unlimited” leave policy does not mean you can go on leave for an unlimited duration, no? It’s obvious there should be a reasonable balance.

It doesn’t help that the unlimited leave policy saw a majority of the folks take lesser leaves. When you have a fixed set of leaves and lapsing, people end up taking leaves just because the count is there.

And another reason is that you get encashment for remaining leaves when you’re laid off or when you quit. With unlimited leaves, the company saves this cost.

It’s criminal to think that any company would make policies that favour their employees. All policies favour employers at all times 😊

Unlimited leaves is a scam to make employees guilty of taking leaves and also save leave encashment money.

If you have pending leaves you will take leave with unlimited leaves you will feel bad for taking leaves.

Win win for employer.

Can't the employer just choose not to allow for leave encashment?

That will make the company look unethical

This is same as flexible working hours. It doesn’t mean you can work anytime you want. It means I will make you work anytime I want

Unlimited leaves is just a cop out from toxic founders In reality you end up taking much lesser than the standard 21-23 leaves and that’s the purpose

Heard of navi ? They also have unlimited leaves policy.
However in practice the company is actually a jail.
It takes ceos approval To take wfh or leave more than 5 years. Needless to say no-one actually dares to reach out to him.
Win win for the company !!!

If I remember correctly, employees at companies with unlimited leaves take less leaves than companies with a fixed number of leaves because employees are not sure what an appropriate number of leaves to take is.

So unlimited leaves is not a benefit to employees.
