Put on PIP? Just leave

If you're ever put on PIP which is basically quiet firing, have a word with the HR, ask them to either fire you or you resign yourself and ask them to at least give you the pay worth your notice period. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND ENERGY TRYING TO GET OUT OF PIP.

Just fucking leave the job and find a new one or do something on your own. It's not worth the mental harassment.

Honestly you shouldn't waste your time and energy to try to convince them to keep you. Utilise that time and energy to find a new job, upskill yourself, work on a side hustle so that you're not entirely dependent on one source of income.

This is what I learnt this year. Be patient, this disruption could lead to something better, something awesome and something that you're more aligned with.

All the best ✨

I'm working for an organisation from past 2+ years, and noticed whenever someone is about to complete an year they are put on PIP, and promotion/hike is delayed by 6-12 months. (+/- 6 weeks on top of that).

Wow! That's an evil way to exploit employees and not pay them and make them anxious about losing the job so that they work without asking for much as they still have a job and not unemployed. What an evil startup! Hope they face their karma soon.

Yes, this is true, this happened to me this year, my default promotion got delayed, as I was in pip & survived the pip , they delayed my promotion

That’s the story for Amazon’s PIP. Not sure about any other place

BubblyPotato
BubblyPotato

Well, this is another company, not Amazon. But yeah, Amazon is really famous for putting people on PIP and then firing them.

It’s same at Persistent Systems , they are one famous for putting on PIP , the fucking worst company

But resigning wont get you serverance pay!

BubblyPotato
BubblyPotato

Yeah, it won't. But if your mental health is at stake due to the PIP then it's better to leave that put yourself through that torture and save up your energy for something that's worth it. You can also try to have a conversation with the HR and maybe negotiate to see if they pay something if you leave. Depends on the situation and the company. If they want to get rid of some employees, they'd happily pay them some money and let them go.

But i am living through the pip just because i dont want a resume gap for however time i can and i want severance pay. Does the gap in resume matter a lot?

Why ask them to fire you?

That will be also captured in your relieving letter

So that you can say that you've been laid off. They usually do all this when they wanna restructure their org so it's not your fault that they laid a person off.

Most companies will offer you voluntary resignation so that on paper it will look as if you were not fired. Firing might help if you are able to convince your potential new employers that it was due to a reorg and nothing to do with your performance. But in India, employers do background check and if they reach out to previous employer, they might get to know the truth.

I totally agree. I was put in PIP last year out of the blue. Something snapped for the manager it seems. He came up with a months plan for me to get out of it(in other words, he wanted documented proof that he put efforts for that month), but the tasks and deadlines he put was just too difficult to be completed in that time. I lost all motivation, still managed to complete around 60% and others were in progress. But, all he could see that it's not complete, and he initiated that I leave the org. Before I joined that org, I was a star performer in my previous org. Hence, I really thought if I am dumb and I am not good enough and not working there, but, truth is, you also need people and manager you like working with to be successful in an org.

So, if anyone else is feeling like you are at fault, there's a chance you might not be. You just haven't found your tribe yet

Dude, I second you. I was in a similar situation. The thing is if someone has made up their mind to fire us, it's simply waste of our time and energy trying to convince them.

And yeah, this PIP thing is annoying, it can actually start making people feel like they're not good enough or they're lacking something while that's not true. It can take a severe blow on one's self confidence especially for early career professionals because they take these things very seriously.

Even the way the Pune girl died, it's because she took their words seriously to prove them that she can work in that pressurising team. Even the Mumbai guy who worked at McKinsey.

It's just evil how corporates destroy a person's self confidence.

I was once on PIP when I was on a personal struggle. Got promoted to next level the very next year.

It depends on your manager.

1000% true. Don’t even bother

Disagree. A friend was put on PIP because of friction with his manager and showing bratty behaviour not necessarily a skill issue. Was put on PIP and within a month he realigned to the team. Was removed from pip.

BubblyPotato

Yeah, it depends on how people are able to turn it around in their favour. Good for him tho.

Not a lot of people would change their conscience and behavior to convince the manager

PIP is actually the most useless tool in any corporate. There are reports that show that when people are put on PIP, their performance further reduces (as against the objective of a PIP) Misery will start, people will be looking for jobs or resign. It’s a sign of a failure of the manager that their team member had to be put on PIP.

Most of the time organisations put you into this because they want to fire you but they can't since you haven't done anything wrong. Generally they torture you to resign yourself so they don't have to give any excuse.
