Work on weekend?!! Advice needed

So thing is In last 1 week my manager/project lead has been threating that you will have to work on weekend if you dont complete your task by friday and put the the task to testing.

And this boils my blood soo damnn much . But as a person who is on lowest level i cant do/say shit. I just disagree with him and dont argue. What would you have done .[ practical advice only]

And thing is i do all my dev work on time even earlier almost everytime and he just goes around and threatens everyone with this. Soo annoying thay dumbfk needs to get rekt .

step 1: Give him the updated timeline for the task assigned. step 2: Let him know you'll pick this up first on Monday

If he doesn't agrees Ask him to email you the details for WORKING ON SATURDAY

If you really don’t want to work so I’d recommend you to stand up to this shitty behaviour but also ask yourself did you have sufficient time to complete this during working days :p ?

This idea may work most of the time.
Do keep a part of completed work(code) in reserve which manager don't know. Always have enough reserve so that if manager asks suddenly, when you are thinking of relaxing a bit, you tell him it will take 'x' time to do and give the completed work from reserve. Do some part of future work, store it in reserve when you have time. Keep this cycle so that you don't feel any pressure.
Note: This is only for these type of people.

Same, bro same. My current manager is toxic but my ex-manger way more toxic no technical knowledge whatsoever, 25% of the time, i finish my entire sprint work in first 5 days and rest

MagicalHamster

They think we have to dance according to their tune. Do this and find other job as soon as possible is the only possible way. And from my experience, they will ask such things only to people who finish their work in right time. People who are not doing the work he will simply threaten them and then fire them at one point. Such people do help us to push forward to get a better job ASAP.

UPDATE : So manager called me and bitched about how he was working late daily for past week for no apparent reason .
(Idk why he was working daily late because all the work was going smooth and i saw no task , so i deduce he is a gand chaatu who was on call with US counter part. ) Tldr: manager said " SAARI RAAT MAI SOYA NAHI , AB MUJHE SONE DO".

Also check if he is chatting up a chick in the team sitting late.😂

Update 2.0- All the task are done as i expected and i am logging off 30 mins early too. With this rant post i wanted to show how some managers who just want to show their power and supremacy do such tactics . They dont know that such things are the ones which will come back to them one day .
Idk what happens to me in future but i hate overtime unless its ground breaking task . So i will always stand up for this and will deny any unnecessary show of power by any fktard.
These dumb single braincell managers think shouting on devs will get their task done faster but they dont know that its only temp and so is their position.
Anyway off to enjoy my weekend Thanks for listening to my dear rant.

Very relatable post, you should not tell about current work status rather T-1 or T-2 status, so that I request for comp for weekend and worked on the same? Lol.

I wish that was the case , what would you do if that dumbass always say "So share your screen and show me what you have done ao far". 😡

Create two repo, one for the manager and other for yourself, don't let him know he is micromanaging you you have to initiate in some way

FluffyNarwhal

Either he gets the impression that you don't work enough or you're estimating your tasks poorly.

I wish it was the case , i never get chance to make estimation for my task 🤣🤣 He is the one who handles it . Since its consulting things are bit fked up on tech side unlike other tech companies

Many things that I see here, this is my suggestion.

  1. How do you want to spend your time over the weekend, it could anything or absolutely nothing, it’s your time no one should debate that. How does this help in your profession setting, it subconsciously helps you to speak to your colleagues and manager that what’s happening over the weekend. This would help you set expectations to your manager and colleagues and overtime it’ll help your manager to realise that you got things to do. It’s the slowest non-confrontational approach.
  2. Track your time over the weekends on things that could be avoided and what caused the spillover. It could be to do with many things and this would help you in observing a pattern and that would eventually help you to have conversations with say your cross functional dependent teams and you can influence their actions without authority to make sure that everyone has their weekends to themselves. This would eventually turn out helpful for your managers because if things don’t spill over and if the projects are going as planned, then manager might not worry about things that needs to be released . This also gives you a skill to manage people and projects effectively and in future it’ll help you be a better manager when you lead teams.
  3. With point 2, you can have a informal conversation with with your manager about how his weekend or her weekend as be, and get to know how your manager generally works by bringing him into the conversation about himself, will reduce any sort of invisible hierarchy or authority, and basically builds empathy on both ends, this conversation can be formalised where you can speak to your manager saying hey I have done some observation and tracking over the things that I walked over the weekend and this is a while thinking to manage projects efficient . What do she/he/they think?
  4. In case all that you have done hasn’t led to any progress - find a new jobs.
PS: I ran out text space to write more 😅
