I will be graduating as a civil engineer in this summer and want to start as a structural engineer in industrial, high rise and offshore structures. I have devoted my whole bachelor's period into structures.

Most companies in campus wants students to work as site engineer with 25k max salary. Even MNC are taking 1 student out of 2-3 colleges with 30k salary.

Since turkey earthquake a huge discussion has began about having safe structures but when I approached few society to help them in designing retrofits for their structural members they wanted me to do it for Max 15k including all of the site supervison and recreating all of their plans because they have lost their structural plans. (Currently working as a intern in a retrofitting company which pays 15% for the work which interns find like a salesperson.)

Did I do mistake on taking civil engineering especially from a tier 2 college in Mumbai? How do people expect structural engineers to be paid less when they literally swear to get jailed and get stripped of their licences when a building even sway a bit?

Do people don't like living in a safe structure or have choosen to die because structural engineering jobs don't even exists now for freshers.

I am thinking to shift to US. Wanted to know if it is worth to go US leaving the parents in India.

Also how much I will be able to save in next 15 years in US. Might come again to India.

Shifting to US

This is anecdotal but just wanted to highlight my observation that the recruitment is getting harder in general and multiple companies fighting for same good candidates. It's really nice to see green shoots considering how hard 2023 has been. The companies still laying off in 2024 are either doing recruitment in India or small startups that are anyway not going to last this entire year. Majority of the recruitment is being driven by captive centers being setup by startups from Europe and US. 

Good luck folks. Make sure you ask for higher numbers.

Things to do after getting laid off

I am a '21 graduate from a Tier 1 college (old IIT) and have had short stints as product manager at a couple of startups. About a year back, I decided to startup but after a few months, realized that startup idea wasn't worth pursuing. 

Researched around a few startup ideas and finally landed upon a good one in D2C space. But the problem is financing. I don't have much saving and friends / family network wouldn't be able to finance this. I really want to pursue this idea but finance is becoming a hindrance. 

So started looking for job opportunities about 3 months back. I have been exploring work opportunities in product / founder office / EIR roles or other generalist role. 

Job hunt process has been frustrating to say the least. Getting very few calls. In most cases, people are ghosting after couple of rounds of interview or assignment. In some cases, after getting through 2-3 rounds, I got to know that opening has been closed temporarily. Most HRs don't even have the decency to give feedback. 

I don't intend to work in job for long anyway. As soon as I have the job, I plan to start working on my business idea and quit as soon as I have enough financial leeway. 

How should I go about job hunt process? I have been trying to connect with folks on LinkedIn in whose company job openings are there. Apart from this, I have been connecting with founders from recently funded startups. Naukri / Instahyre and IIM Jobs are other portals I have been looking on. Anything I should do differently here?

Hey guys,

I'm sure that almost everyday we see the news of layoffs and I feel like I made the mistake of switching in this tough time. I have 3.5 YOE and I switched my job in September 2022 last year from a very comfortable SDE job, only the pay was less, I had a good reputation there and only switched because of money and growth, since I thought that i'm not married yet so I can take the  risk. I was very confident when I joined but then I saw that it is client facing work and with strict deadlines, my confidence has been waning every day, the environment here is completely different from my previous company, they need work quickly and i'm scared to ask for challenging work, so far I have survived with picking work that I know or somewhat know, but I don't know how long it will last, i'm scared if they give me something I dont know and I don't deliver, what will happen. 

I have enough money for 5-6 months and I give myself some comfort by thinking, the worst they can do is fire me, not kill me. But then I see all these layoffs and I think how will I get a job in this environment. And If I do get a job and it turns out the same with the same stressed environment, then will I switch again.

I feel trapped and think I made a mistake when I was confident, I should not have aimed for growth, I should not have left my comfortable job and should have known my place.

Is feeling like this natural or is it just me, how do you guys maintain your peace of mind when you feel trapped and stressed. I don't want to give up but I also want this horrible feeling to end
