Posting after a long time but this got unhinged take got me tweaking. Drop an upvote if you think Software Engineering is underpaid. ⬆️
First off, weare not just "gluing libraries togehter" lmao. That's like saying chefs are just throwing ingredients in a pot. It takes madskills to know which libraries to use, how to integrate them, and how to build somthing that actually works and scales. Unlike a lot of PMs that just run around taking meetings and actually doing no work lol.
And don't even get me started on the "not solving world hunger" bullshit. Most jobs don't directly cure cancer or end world hunger. But guess what? The apps and systems we build make life easier for millions of peeps. Ever used Swiggy? Ordered food online? Watched Disney Hotstar? Yeah, you're welcome.
Also, let's talk about the value we bring to companies. One good dev can literaly make or break a startup. We're the ones turning ideas into reality, scaling systems to handle millions of users, and keeping everything running smooth. That is not just gluing stuff together lol. Seems like an inexperienced take from an Excel junkie [Either a PM or a Data analyst will think Software Engineering is like that.
So nah, we are not overpaid. If anything, considering the value we bring and the crazy demands of the job, most of us are probs underpaid.
But hey, if u think it's so easy, why don't u try it? I'll wait while u learn to code, build a complex system, and deal with production issues at 3am. 😉 I bet your cursor/no code indie project will work at scale hahaha.

I mean they aren’t totally wrong.
I have seen lot of people who have zero skills just running behind packages.
And lot of developers have skill issues.
But I totally agree with each and every word of yours.
On top of that I believe, all the bottom fodder will get kicked out first. Service companies will take a hard hit. And only few people who can read and debug whatever code gets generated and are good at “prompt engineering” will survive.
Then AI subscriptions rates are gonna up like crazy. AWS did something like this already.
And then people with actual skills(especially Jrs) who can code without relying too much on AI would be hired cuz they would be cheaper than AI subscriptions and maybe copyright issues
However the senior folks or people who have really good technical depth will remain.
And as salt recently posted, PMs will take a much worse hit than Devs. Cuz they can actually analyse data without bias and give better suggestions.
But all of this is my take.
Those are exceptions bro
The majority of IT people are one medical bill away from poverty and one mishap away from unemployment.
Of course some people are overpaid but that's true for literally almost every profession.
Knowing how to center a div alone makes you worthy of every penny you get.

Well, if you actually think about it, software engineers are sacrificing their physical and mental health for the job.
The job demands you become an introvert and sit and read through colourful text that doesn’t make any sense for hours on end to figure out that some idiot used hyphens instead of underscores and that’s why some foreign guy can’t access his private videos.
So considering this, we’re underpaid,
