I have been ghosted more by recruiters than being ghosted by my dates. Why can’t recruiters be respectful to us and stop ghosting us? Software engineers are human beings and have feelings too.

Why do recruiters ghost?

Was under a 3 month long process for an internship position at FAANG level company. Had multiple rounds of interview and breezed through all. Was on the last stage of the interview which was yet to be scheduled and received an email from the recruiter that I've been rejected because they have found better candidates who have completed all the rounds and I had one round remaining. A week back I shared my availability for the last round and was following up daily for the schedule but didn't receive any response from the recruiter end and now this. Such a shitty hiring process.

Rant for getting rejected for no reason.

Amazon Microsoft, Google, etc. All layying off people.

They just started sending emails today morning for US/Canada. 

India/EU would be sent next week so we dont know the exact numbers yet.

Same information going on Blind, hundreds of Amazon employees laid off in the morning.

I'll go first. I got a call for an APM role from one of the companies which did sound pretty sketchy and the recruiter was started bullying me into answering questions, when I asked to know more about the role. The recruiter was extremely unprofessional, and obviously the conversation was nowhere great. They however, did go ahead and sent me the JD and other links, etc to fill in and apply for the job. Mind you, I hadn't applied for the job. 🥲
It just was a pretty sour conversation which had left me in an uncertain situation. Any similar experiences?

Weird recruiter experiences

Asked for my expected CTC. I answered and they weren't happy with it. Said they could only give at 40% increment of current CTC and then asked for my current CTC. After hearing my current CTC they said I shouldn't be earning this much and that I was obviously making it up. Then asked to send over my salary payslip which I refused. Basically the HR started being extremely rude at this point stating that I was being unprofessional. I asked their salary budget for the role which they refused to answer. Then I asked if they were willing to hire me for a lower CTC which she instantly agreed and said she knew I was reasonable and I shouldn't have lied about my CTC. I then said good luck finding a candidate for that amount and hung up.

So i approached a PM at klub, a revenue based financing firm & asked him about open positions. He forwarded my cv to the hr.

Couple of days later, the hr called me & we had an initial discussion. Then he scheduled an intro round with a PM.

I had the PM round which was completely behavioral. It seemed like he was not much interested in the interview & took it just for the sake of it. Questions like tell me about yourself, why klub, why PM were asked.

2 weeks later i called the hr(yes, there were no responses from them) & asked him whats the status to which he replied, we have proceeded with another candidate.

*Here comes the interesting part*

I asked him to provide me a reason because i didnt get any feedback from the PM. This is the conversation which happened
He: we are looking for pm with experience in api integrations only
Me: okay so why was that not mentioned in the JD
He: the requirement was changed later & also you dont have the experience required(1-3 yrs)
Me: so why did you contact me in the 1st place if you thought i didnt have enough experience? Also, there are 2 guys who are working at klub who are from consulting background & have no experience whatsoever but they're apm
He: but you need to understand that they are from tier 1 college, bits pilani & iit madras
Me: how does that make a difference in product experience? I have worked on & built real products even if its for 10 months, all they have are hypothetical case studies, its not like they have been entrepreneur at past
He: no we have specific requirements & the hiring manager didn't see yours as a fit

Hr will hire people with no experience but from a premium college than people with experience but from a not so known college

The mindset of some recruiters nowadays

Different companies follow different methods to choose their workforce, so if you've given/taken couple of interviews yourself can you provide insight on how you do it and why you think it works? Also what would you change about the general process of tech hiring?

Let me go first. 
0. (obvious, but) Minimal weightage for DSA - 
When I conduct interviews, I rarely ask DSA problems. It rarely gives me an opportunity to assess the candidate's breadth of knowledge, and come to a conclusion of how much experience they have with the tasks that they're going to do on the job. What if they've practiced the same problem / variation of the problem that I ask? I want to assess technical competence, not their acting skills. 

1. (debatable) Culture fit should be given a higher weightage than skills - 
Skills can be learnt, behavior and character takes time to build.  It most often hinders the progress of the team. 

2. Stop setting standards for the interview that your team doesn't follow in the first place -
I've had friends who had to pass interviews of high standards only to work in shitty teams. They were yearning for an achha din but it never came.

How would you fix tech hiring?

The amount of pride in this post (https://shorturl.at/nopPW) almost baffles me, how is it okay to ask someone to spend their time on a 'pre-interview' assignment? What if the candidate doesn't fit the budget, or the notice period is a bit too much etc. Imagine going through so much only to be laid off because "sorry we hired like crazy and need to do cost-cutting now"

Hi all , so today I revieved a mail from certain person saying that he will get me placed in a company for 60000 rs of 10 installments . The company is pretty famous and the salary is slightly above the witch average salary. But the catch is that I have to pay a initial amount of 4k . Yes it's pretty sketchy but my college mates were placed in MBRDI package was 10 lpa but they paid 1.2 l total . He did get placed. I need advice please

Picked up coding again and feel ready for a job now Should I be honest or lie about the gap? Been ghosted my few recruiters whom I was honest with.]

JS developer here. I used to be a decent student, public speaker and one of the best quizzers in the college scene (former National Champ). But I never addressed some traumatic events that took place in my life before I turned 16. My depression took refuge in substance abuse and I abandoned all studies/career prospects during the pandemic. Eventually after 7 years of using, I got clean/sober in Jan'23 and resumed my studies. I earned my degree but on paper it took me 8 years to complete a 4 year B. Tech (2016-24).

Reasonably I get asked about the gap in my academics by hr/recruiters whom I push my CV to. I've been dead honest to them about my struggles with mental health and addiction in the past. And I've been getting ghosted. (It could be because of skill reasons on my part but I'm not even getting a feedback).

Should I not tell recruiters the truth about the gap? Should I leave the addiction bit out? How should I word it? I've never held a real coding job before but been slogging for the last 6 months to get better each day (my github and projects will reflect that). Please help me out with all your valuable suggestions. If you're a tech recruiter let me know how you would perceive my case.

You don't have to. They are not your friends and you don't know how someone might take it as.

Hello Grapeviners,

What is with Indian recruiters wanting to know your CTC as the very first step of hiring? And when asked to share the ctc range in which the role falls, they refuse to share.  So basically they just want to lowball candidates based on their current CTC and parity is a joke?
Now If a recruiter denies sharing the range for the role and insists on knowing my CTC, I run!  What are your thoughts?

As a recruiter, i have candidates asking me the payscale and i usually share them the compensation bands we have ...although in most cases we are told strictly not to tell the applicants ...however for me , i think it kinda makes my job much easier as they don't false expectations with the role or the salary ...neither i make them waste their time interviewing us ...saves a lot on both sides  
 My managers do expect me to have certain extra good profiles just to maintain our pipeline and show a good funnel of quality folks..but it does not work my way ...

Whenever i apply for new job opening the HR asks this stupid question every-time. How can we deal with it? People should hire based on their skills not based on their current CTC.

I was hiring for a web designer in last role.
We had an internal referral, and I checked her portfolio before reaching out.
She had multiple projects, worked with many customers across countries, the designs were fresh and inviting, no clutter.

She was the one (for the role)!
Exactly what we were looking for. 

I had a budget of 25-30LPA, had quoted 19-24 LPA (because well)
Her expectations were 30-33 LPA

Cut to, she was the only one till final round and they were processing her offer letter at 31LPA

So basically I don't hesitate in challenging the interviewer if I feel like they don't know how to interview a senior candidate

so during many interviews, this is how I have caught them off guard:

1. The interviewer was asking me technical questions and expecting to explain properly throughout. So at the end i asked him about the tech stack they use, he said Azure. I asked him why they use Azure and not AWS, to which he said "it's cheaper", i didn't let it go, i asked him for a proper technical explanation, his red face was worth seeing.

2. The interview asked me a hard DSA question, and I wasn't able to solve it properly, he didn't even give me enough hints, just expected me to solve it. So halfway I asked him, would you like to solve a DSA if I ask you right now, he said no because it's not his interview. To which I asked, are you afraid that you won't be able to solve? If you are going to reject me for not solving this question, would you resign if you aren't able to solve the question. He ended the call.

3. One interviewer was asking me absurd technical detailed questions. I asked him why are you asking such questions, he said he needs to know my thought process because he will work with me. I started asking him similar questions, he said he won't answer because it's not his interview. I said I also need to know your thought process because we'll work together, so you should also answer these questions, he had no reply.

4. The interviewer asked me about a challenging project that I had done recently. I don't like this question at all. So I said there wasn't any challenging project because I'm good at what I do so it's always easy for me. He moved on to the next question.

5. HR asked me why I resigned without an offer? I asked if it's mandatory? No reply.

Not sure whether this is something to tom-tom about. Talks more about the quality of interviewer & the approach taken by the person.   
  
 To be honest, they're well within their right to ask you a tough question and/or to test your thought process, that's their job. If you get so easily offended, you're probably not going to fit in, in the long term.  
  
 I'm sure there are better ways to communicate that the interviewer is asking you a lame question or there's insufficient information.  
  
 Honestly, I take tons of interviews, an hour spent interviewing is an hour spent not doing actual work and drop in productivity. Doubt if senior people would ever do this to waste 'their' time... (Forget yours). Sensible people wouldn't.  
  
 No offense, but with so many interviews going this way, maybe time to point the mirror the other way...
