I am reading very often that the craze around product management is too much and this career is not worth the hype. Adding on to that it has huge supply of PMs and many of PMs are underpaid. Is it true?

Just an open ended question on why are layoffs happening on such a scale. I personally feel the skill to salary ratio has fucked up so much lately that the companies are having to fire people who are essentially useless to them. More of liabilities than just assets! What do you think?

Layoffs - who do you blame?

Absolutely agreed. Hiring in hordes because money was easily available earlier and founders/companies thought that they will be able to build more and hence get more value / valuation sooner was the core reason why the skill to salary ratio got f’ed up. And it’s good that it’s being reset now. 
  
 Coming to who to blame for layoffs - no one. It’s pure capitalism - there was money, hence there were jobs. For whatever time people got paid a lot more than they deserved - they should be rather thankful. If they built their life around the assumption that this much money was the new normal, it was their naïveté. Companies got to survive, and they have to do whatever has to be done… as long as it’s ethical. Firing is fine. Not paying salaries / dues is not.

No, I'm not talking about the job market. That's dog shit -- barely any vacancies, and engineers earn 25%ish more. 

However, in a world with 10x better Co-Pilots and other GenAI tools, problem identification is going to be every employee's moat. 'Tech-Enabled' Business PMs will have the brightest futures. There's already a rise in PM-led vs Eng-led startups. This will become clearer 5-10 years down the line.

Also, supply-demand is not as skewed as you think. Everyone thinks this job is easy, and hence, a bunch of folks are aspiring PMs on LinkedIn. I believe quality PMs are still rare (personally have a long way to go).

Would love to hear more. I'm young in my career and maybe naive but this is what I feel.

Today a poll was conducted in my WhatsApp group for people who are planning for ms by the fall 2025 at US that wha roles are they targeting post their masters and majority of them are voted for product management so I want to ask is the product management is becoming new norm or it's just fomo among engineering grads like it was for software development 2-4 yrs back. Also what's the future of PMs in terms of salary, growth with advancement in AI tools

Lately I am observing trend that product roles are going down, not many company believe in hiring product roles. At least small/mid startup wants CTPO roles and they want someone to play dual roles, primarily tech led products roles. Pure product roles is becoming lesser. Even few bigger MNCs have fewer products roles to offer. Is it just me? Or grapevine thinks same as well?

How does the market demand for product managers in the short term? Do you guys see any reduced demand for the role? Difficult to find any openings or difficulty in clearing the interviews?

How true is this?

Everyone and their mother became a product manager in the last few years. How safe are these jobs in a recession. I often hear (from engineers who don’t hide their disdain for PMs so maybe a biased opinion) that they are the first one to let go. Is that true?

Why do educated graduates are paid the same as a sweeper of railway ? Why do service based company do this , do they think freshers are as worthy as a sweeper ? This is a genuine question, most of the service based companies earn in billions why they choose to pay shit to a hard working student who just got a job ? This is so unfair.
