I work in a slowing industry (Ed-Tech!) in a generalist role (Project Management!) for half a decade now! You'd think I would be better positioned to deal with life! Heck, NO! 

This crippling feeling of insecurity or job loss always puts an extra stress on day to day life. I couldn't take any risks in terms of a house or a car or a big EMI purchase in life! 

What if I get laid off? Will this generalist role help in landing anything next? Do I need an MBA for that? Switching to any specialized roles will take extensive preparation with time being in short supply with family and kids!

How to get rid of layoff fear and feel secure?

I work with Swiggy and as many of you already know the culture has become extremely toxic in Swiggy. Expectations of working 12-16 hours per day, be available on weekends, play dirty politics, blame other to save yourself , get really really aggressive, all of this with a constant fear of losing your job. The leaders are saying this culture change is required to achieve high growth targets for IPO.  They say a culture like this is required to raise the bar & keep people on their toes. But looking at Byjus it appears that this may help in the short run but eventually things fall apart. Employees are human resources not machines. But these toxic leaders don’t really care, as there is always some people available to replace the previous lot who left due to the toxicity. I really hope the leadership of companies like Swiggy open their eyes & realise this before it’s too late for their business. 

And people who are considering to join Swiggy. BEWARE. This isn’t the place it used to be. People have left within 1-2 months because of this culture. And nearly EVERYONE is looking out to switch.

Apparently the company is trying really hard to do damage control but the cat is out of the bag. They’ve been abhorrent in the way they conduct their company.

This is a tight slap to anyone who expects unreasonable working hours without fair compensation.

**Story**

On October 7th, their reporting manager set some alarming expectations right off the bat. The manager demanded unpaid overtime and excessive work hours beyond what's typically considered reasonable.

When the employee tried to establish healthy boundaries and bring up work-life balance, the manager's response was dismissive and mocking. He belittled these concepts as "fancy terms" and "Western developed nation behavior," implying they had no place in this work environment. The manager even ridiculed the employee's desire for personal time to read and exercise, treating these basic needs as mere excuses.

There's a significant difference between voluntarily putting in extra effort for your own passionate project versus being coerced into overwork by an established, profitable company.

I have done MBA from 7 years of work ex and switched into product management later. I have been struggling for the last 3 years with switching jobs every year post MBA.
 I am not able to find any anchor or goal. Further, wfh doesn't help either 😭😭. I was planning to connect with people who empathize with my situation, any guidance or help.

Is there someone with 10 years of experience who thinks, he is miserable in his current job and dont know what he wants to do in his life?

I've noticed a pattern where HRs from mediocre companies are extremely arrogant and ask unnecessary questions. Whether it is from their tone of voice, to asking ridiculous questions about a candidate's personal life and things that are already on the resume, why do they act so holier than thou? Now FAANG adjacent companies and their HRs/ first point of contacts are always empathetic and very clear in asking sensible, relevant questions. Why don't companies realise that their first point of contact is what affects their brand and hiring unqualified folks makes it worse. Have you ever noticed this? What do you think can be done to make this/ candidate experience better?

Why are HRs from mediocre companies so arrogant?

HRs in mid places are usually coming from really small / unknown companies and feel like they’ve made it hence the arrogance. Folks in big/decent companies usually have come from wonderful education bgs and workplaces and if not, have worked hard enough to reach where they are. That humbles you, I feel.

The stupidity and arrogance of some leaders in some companies to use colleges as filter criteria for what is clearly irrelevant for the role. 

Mostly these idiots end up fucking up company after company creating these neo-casteist groups sucking off and living off each other.

This identity based hiring is the start of corporate politics. I still don’t understand how difficult it is for fucking idiots to understand that while hiring for most roles you have to encourage diverse backgrounds at the start of the process to help you hire the right candidate for the long term, specially in a startup. 

PS I’m not against preferring candidates from certain colleges if it’s relevant. What i do hate is this herd behaviour of trying to hire only from your alumni the moment you are given leadership roles.

It must be such shitty experience to work under idiots like these if you are not from their alumni colleges because their biases play into all evaluations they do about their teams.

This is pretty common, has been like that for ages. It’s their company and their rules. You also have the freedom to NOT apply. Maybe they have had better experiences with candidates from top tier universities. Remember getting into most tier 1 colleges is itself difficult and only top talent make it. Also get better academic infrastructure, exposure to alumni networks, etc. So there are high chances they will do well. 
  
 Doesn’t mean that candidates from non-tier1 universities can’t excel. Some can be equally good or even better. Maybe these guys don’t want to take a chance with this role.

I have been through ups and downs in IT, but these layoffs seem crazy. There is just no pattern to it, more like everyone is firing let me fire.

Honestly I feel its high time Tech companies, Startups take a hard look at their business and revenue model. Most just seem to be in a herd mentality.  Every one is mass hiring, let me also mass hire. Every one is giving exorbitant salaries, let me also give.

Its become more a cycle now, hire in large numbers, find there is no work to give, no revenue to sustain, and so mass fire again. This just cant be going on. 

Who makes mistakes that results in revenue loss or crunch?

Who gets fired ? 

Every one except the ones who are responsible.

Dont fucking give me the reasoning that you are doing this for efficiency and streamlining.

No you are just doing it to protect your own arse, while making scapegoats of others.

So the Musks, Pichais, Zuckerbergs happily take fat bonuses, while drafting teary regret letters for firing. And they are supposed to be our role models to look up to? 

Enough is enough IT industry can't forever be running in this same mode. These hire and fire cycles are getting weary nowadays.

As everyone knows that zomato is now hiring 800 employees after two months of a mass layoff, and exit of senior profiles like VP and CTO.

Let me tell you the truth about the founder. He is an opportunist. He doesn't give a shit about the culture or any employee. The company is built on the death of many riders and cheating with low-wage workers.

Timing- Isn't it a bit weird that a company that did a mass layoff two months back is now hiring? Seeing that many employees got laid off from the top-tier company. It is a great time to employ smart folks as the hiring competition in the market is at its lowest. Or the mass layoff that happened previously was planned with the thought of hiring again next year with very little competition and desperate candidates. 

Layoff: In zomato, it's hire and fire culture. I have seen many of my friends leave even after performing well. Honestly, sometimes I don't even feel human. It's expected from employees to start their day early and go late at night. If you want to leave early (around 6 or 7), you should have a solid reason for doing that. Here code release happens late at night due to less traffic. So it's expected of you to be available all the time.

Incompetent Managers- I have worked with two managers here. Both know the existing system as they were once an IC building that system. The issue with these people is that they grew up the ladder because they were the only ones left behind in the team. They lack real-world system knowledge. I have previously worked at amazon, and I know the team lead level there. But here it's like jo ruk gaya vo raja hai. It's hard to work with these people as they lack proper estimations of the projects and at the end of the day. The ICs have to face the wrath of the product teams.

People who are planning to join the company. Please do join, as working 24/7 you would learn a lot in a very short period of time. Also, the culture is team dependent, so you might get a team with chill environment.

Reality check at Zomato

Majority of Indian startups has toxic work culture and the same is not true for any US or Europe based startup. Indian startups just copy paste ideas from the west and apply it to Indian context. We don't have original product barring few such as Postman and all. Why is it so and how we can improve the situation?

Majority of Indian startups are shit.

To all the people here, I have observed way too many posts on salary checks based on experience.

I can pretty much guarantee you, your salary or pay doesn't depend on your years of experience. Your salary or pay depends on these factors primarily -
1. Location of the company (city / country)
2. The impact you have created in past (very highly dependent)
3. The impact your hiring managers believe you can create once you are on boarded (again, very important)
4. The kind of company you join(can they afford to pay high salaries)

That's all that matters! There could be definitely more factors, but these truly are major ones!

For all those who are doing salary checks across their years of experience, figure out if those are really unique years of experience or doing same thing year on year! 

For those who think some people are overpaid, or people this young shouldn't deserve this salary or that these people just got lucky, that's not the case.
When you are good, you make your own luck!

Next time you evaluate your salary, see the impact you have created. Then figure out what you should earn as a salary for the impact you have created and ask for it! Higher the impact, higher the reason for great pay!

Have you felt the same way? How many years of work ex after which you started feeling this way? 

Stability and money I’m grateful for. But I hate the constant comparison and competitiveness among peers/colleagues. Makes me want to quit and do a Teach for India fellowship. A little corporate detox. 

Wish I had become an athlete instead. I know it’s not an easy life, but It’s the kind of competitiveness I’m inclined towards. Not inclined towards the kind where you compete with people to please a company that will never care for you as a human. But people fail to recognise that, lose perspective, and lose themselves too. People have no class in this shitty world. If I have kids, they’re definitely becoming athletes and not entering this hellhole. 

Most ironically, I’m borderline considering an MBA to escape the corporate life for 2 years, but obviously I’m aware I will only get entrenched further in it due to the degree.

Oh man. Just hoping for the day i can quit it all. Right now on the blue pill, but ek din ayega. I'm convinced only sociopaths and people with no personalities can enjoy being in this rut. Lavda build something - it's just about keeping the hamster wheel rolling.

One of the director in Business team was fired by COO Vivek Sinha just because she took planned leaves and approved planned leaves of  her team members. COO fired her over phone call . 

Unacademy used to such a great place up until February 2022 now it has become place filled with toxicity and CEO Gaurav seems to unaware of what's happening around him and is busy boasting how much money Unacademy has in bank.

Don't join Unacademy if you want to life outside work .
