I've been hearing a lot about this four-day work week concept lately. A friend of mine in New Zealand just started a job at a company that's trying it out. 

She says she's loving the extra day off, but I wonder about the long-term effects. Has anyone here experienced a compressed work week? 

I'm curious how it impacts productivity and work-life balance. If your company suddenly announced they were switching to a four-day week, how do you think it would go down?

So, this company I have an offer from seems great culture wise. I asked some members for red flags and they said its a software they use that tracks them for 8 hours and takes screenshots every 10 minutes. I have no experience working in companies with this implementation earlier. Can anyone shed some light on whether this may be a deal breaker or not? Heard mix responses from current employees that it’s hard to clock 40-42 hours a week and takes away our personal freedom. What are the thoughts?

Hey peeps!

Currently working in a Fintech company in Mumbai as a Frontend Engineer with over a year of experience. The current CTC is 7 LPA. 

I feel like the growth here is limited and from the past few months there's been a lot of micro-management. Even the CTC is not up to Mumbai's expense standard. I live in a soapbox and pay like 1/5 th of monthly salary. Standard of living has been decreasing while it should be opposite.

+ I've 6 days work week with 9 hours /day shift. Although I've decided to drop in papers soon, I'd like to hear your opinions. 

Brownie points if you refer me to some good early stage startup probably in BLR or Pune or Remote.

It’s should and will always be about how productive those hours actually are. 

You see, no knowledge worker puts out more than 2.5 to 5 hours of real work in a day. That’s 12.5 to 25 hours of productive work in a week. The rest? It’s just meetings, updates and moving things around.

Five-day work weeks? If you’re measuring by butts in seats, sure. But if you’re looking at actual output, it’s a joke. We need to obsess over productive time, not clocking hours. The attendance/week hours mindset is a pseudo-metric killing the workforce, making us focus on quantity over quality.

Think about it: As a knowledge worker - your days are filled with meetings, status updates, and email threads. How much of that is real, impactful work? Very little. We’re stuck in busyness, mistaking it for productivity. But then again, if orgs obsess on outcomes only, employees will call them out: 'You don’t see my effort to go from A to Z, you don’t acknowledge it.' Hence, orgs measure you by hours. And for those thinking, 'Pay me by hours, overtime factored in' – great on paper, but useless for knowledge workers.

IMHO, we are way more more comfortable measuring by hours than outcomes.
We rave about deep work, about focus hours, but in reality we laude how long someone stays logged in. 

Weird isn't it.

The real debate isnt / wasnt about how long the work week should be (70/60/50/40).

I strongly believe if companies reduced work hours to 6-7 hours a day it’ll increase in individual’s moral as well as productivity, what do you guys think? 
Currently my shift hours is 9 hours a day traveling to and from excluded which leads to 12 hours a day, which gets hectic sometimes.

Yes, we should all work 70 hours a week so shareholders can make 70 millions a week and then at the first sign of trouble they can lay off 700 employees a week 😂

F*ck the 8 hours workdays, who would want to work 8 or more hours a day for an employer who could fire me in a day if they like to, I am just another replaceable product. I can be replaced in a week, why would I dedicate my peak years to that company?

One time only made 9 Calls in 30 Days for my first company- I was the only SDR in Company , My target was 100 Calls a day. nothing happened to me why? Coz I achieved even in the months before and after that month. I just brought results. 

one of my leaders used to only come to office for 2 hours a day, yk what happened to him? he was promoted every quarter, why? he brought results in those 2 hours, there was no need for him for 8 hours.

Is it about the hours tho? Are the employers actually interested in your working hours? Yes alot of them are and to hell with them. I would gladly take a paycut to work with an employer who does not count hours but work, and not work but results. 

I don't believe in work hours personally, to me it is always what is my company looking for? Do you know your day to day targets, yes you do. But do you know why those targets specifically and what is the end goal for 2024 for your company as a whole? Most of us don't know that.

That's where employers fking fail and employees too- both of them fail here.

Boss counts work hours, because they don't know why employee is not achieving the tasks, employee doesn't have any idea why something is critical and keeps postponing these tasks/targets. 

If both of them focus on the Why, there will be no hour counts, there will be no screen recording, bla bla bla. Fk this mentality.

Fuck the 8 Hour workdays?

I don't count hours for my startup. Team is chill and likes it too. Plus all remote. There should be others like me too.
